Hey there folks. A buddy of mine asked me to come up to shoot next weekend and I'm coming up empty on ammo availability. Anybody know of a decent online retailer I could try? I struck out on all the big chains like Cabelas and Gander outdoors.
dont use 556 in a 223 the pressure is much higher than the 223 gun is designed for , but you can put 223 in a 556 gun no problem,,,,,,,, to find ammo try ammoseek.com
great prices, great customer service, and quick, too.
The problem with Russian ammo is its steel case rather than brass causing a poor seal with the chamber face due to different expansion characteristics. It causes a carbon build up eventually leading to FTE problems. The rifle has to be taken down and using a chamber brush on a drill and your favorite carbon solvent scrub/polish the chamber clean
The work around is to use a brass cartridge every 3-4th round. The brass will expand correctly and take the carbon out.
Correction: 223 can be run through a 556 chambered rifle
Same here.

I read in some magazine years ago that the Russian steel cases are coated with lacquer to prevent rust.
When fired, the heat melts the lacquer and coats the inside of the chamber. Over time it builds up in the chamber and becomes like glue.

You need to use ammoseek.com. Ive seen in stock ammo sell out in 5 minutes. If you find someone with the ammo you want, you need to buy it right then, or it will be gone. At least for 5.56, and Id assume 9mm and otger popular calibers as well.
I was wrong about one thing. The ratio was 1 brass to 9 steel.
BUMP!
Some of the WWII 7.62 x 54R surplus ammo does have a lacquer coating.
If I may piggyback on your thread with this question:
Years ago, there was a company called sendmeammo.com. It was kind of like a magazine subscription. You’d set up a regular monthly order for, say, one 50 round box of 9mm, and one 50 round box of .45ACP. Every month, they’d charge your account and you’d get automatic ammo shipments delivered. It was really kind of nice knowing that if the local shelves were bare, you’d keep getting your ammo.
I had to cancel when a huge house expense had to take priority.
Sadly, they’re no longer around.
Does anyone know if any similar businesses like that exist?
The major offender is steel case vs brass and AR are made to tighter specs than an AK.
Yep. That’s the beauty of a Mosin-Nagant. You dig your ammo out of a farmer’s field in Ukraine and it works just fine.
Cheap Russian ammo typically has a lacquer coating that gums things up after awhile - if you’re shooting a large volume of rounds and not meticulously cleaning your rifle. AK’s have looser tolerances and their chambers are tapered instead of straight-walled & can usually handle it better, though.
Thank You for the tip. Do You live in Salisbury ? We are in Mooresville.
I found this VERY scientific, detailed and comprehensive field study on steel vs brass and various brands at lucky Gunner. Quite definitive. A must read for all.

Very interesting. 10,000 rounds Is a lot of shooting!
Seems like the fast burning powder and high chamber pressure is more of a problem than the polymer or lacquer coatings. One of the reasons you might choose a mid-length barrel is better reliability.
