A world first. New footage from Mars rendered in 4K resolution.
The cameras on board the rovers were the height of technology when the respective missions launched. Why dont we actually have live video from Mars?
Although the cameras are high quality, the rate at which the rovers can send data back to earth is the biggest challenge. Curiosity can only send data directly back to earth at 32 kilo-bits per second.
Instead, when the rover can connect to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, we get more favourable speeds of 2 Megabytes per second.
However, this link is only available for about 8 minutes each Sol, or Martian day.
As you would expect, sending HD video at these speeds would take a long long time. As nothing really moves on Mars, it makes more sense to take and send back images.
A 10-minute clip posted on YouTube features panoramic views of the Red Planets surface, including sweeping deserts, massive dunes, craggy outcroppings and cracked ground strewn with jagged rocks.
The videos journey across the surface of another world was posted by Britains ElderFox Documentaries, which said it was created using digital photos shot by three NASA rovers Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity and beamed back to Earth.
They were then stitched together to create the illusion of a camera panning across the desolate and barren landscape and provide what the narrator calls the most lifelike experience of being on Mars.
The locations featured in the video bear names that include Cape Verde, Santa Maria Crater, Burns Cliff and Marathon Valley Entrance.
Com’on now ... there just has to be something sexist or even racist about these vintage ads ... Anyway ... I’m offended and I’m going to have to riot! See what you made me do?
Amazing pictures - taken from the surface of another world. I’ll never be able to stop appreciating that.
And Musk wants to go and inhabit this barren desolate uninhabitable place because our beautiful verdant earth MIGHT warm up a degree or two??
I can understand wanting to go there because we want to go there, but certainly not because things on earth will get so miserable that that desolation will be more appealing.
Amaziin
Need a 4K monitor to view the detail.
Obviously, a 1K monitor won’t see the 4K detail.
I love it when the government spends money on something worthwhile.
Wut they aint showin is video of a crashed WW II bomber they found in a crater with Bigfoot and Elvis daid at the controls!
I seen it on the History Channel.
Great video but it could pass for anywhere in Utah or Northern Arizona.
I kept expecting to see BLM carved into the sand
I miss the old Mars bars with the whole almond on top instead of ground and dispursed in the nugget.
I’d go just to not pay taxes.
Thanks for that.
Reminds me of the couple years I spent working on a project at Fort Irwin, CA.
Same geography.
Looks a lot like Twenty-nine Palms Marine Corps Base as well..............
Thanks to unmanned spacecraft throughout the solar system were able to see this and much more. These reconnaissance missions and the data they collect will pave the way for man someday.
