Joe Biden is bringing back the front-porch campaign. It might work. (probably not)

Republicans keep hoping and expecting that former vice president Joe Biden will have to leave his basement and hit the campaign trail sometime soon. Don’t be surprised, though, if that doesn’t happen. Biden looks to be trying to run a 21st-century version of the standard 19th-century “front porch campaign” - and it might work.

Presidential candidates rarely actively campaigned in the 19th century. The lack of a national railroad system made travel too arduous for candidates before 1850. Even after that, it took days for trains to travel between major cities, and the lack of any means of mass communication besides partisan newspapers meant any candidates would exhaust themselves for little to no impact. Many aspiring presidents therefore did what made sense: They stayed at home and let the crowds come to them.

Republican campaigns were the experts at staging these efforts. They would treat each day the way modern consultants do, selecting a largely favorable audience and designing a speech to make a point relevant to the audience. Workers would hear about tariffs while black voters would hear about emancipation. Reporters would camp out at the candidate’s house, transcribe the words, take the photos and send their missives to their local papers via telegraph. Much like a rally or photo op today, front-porch campaigners could reach the entire nation with a targeted, clear message.

I was watching “The Five” and Jesse said that if the election was held today, Biden would win. Huh? I was only half listening. This can’t be true, can it?

I took a quick look at youtube last night. All of Biden’s “events” and “rallies” over the last year have but a tiny fraction of the number of views Trump’s Tulsa rally, Mt Rushmore event and 4th of July speech had. His event with the most views was his “virtual fundraising event” with 0bama had 72,000 views. Trump’s Tulsa rally had over 4 MILLION views. Trump’s Mt Rushmore speech had close to 6 MILLION views. Trump’s 4th of July speech had about 3 MILLION views. I’ve read that the Tulsa rally also had 7 MILLION views on FOX, I don’t know how many millions watched the Mt Rushmore or 4th of July speeches on FOX. No one really pays any attention to Biden, even democrats.

I think Joe thinks he can win the election by hiding in his basement and not directly facing Trump. If he gets out and campaigns the populace will see his mental capability is about that of a 13 year old.

Nope.
I am quite happy for Joe Dementia to remain in his basement even as Trump revs up his campaign with massive rallies and develops an unstoppable momentum going into November.

So what is a ‘back-porch’ campaign?

Sniffing hair and groping?

I don't know about that, but he did advocate firing a shotgun through the door.

This reminds me of the 1900 elections between McKinley and William Jennings Bryant.
The thing is, this is not 1900.

Oh, hell. Did Joe forget where he lives again so he’s gonna go house to house? I hate when he does that.
