What do you think about Juneteenth? Consider how suddenly it’s been foisted upon us.

Nothing sudden about it. I’ve known about Juneteenth for over 25 years. Cinco de Mayo was invented by Budweiser to sell beers they were distributing. The last emancipation is a valid holiday.

Buncha virtue signaling twunts. And the GOPe is worse than the demoncraps. They are in full surrender mode to the America-haters.

Why Thank You! 11 Years, and a daily feature in the religion forum. I “left that other site” because, although it was allegedly conservative, it was not allowing me free expression.

Juneteenth was an emancipation for me, in a way!

“What do you think about Juneteenth?”

Juneteenth is not a day on the calendar. It sounds like something mischievous white people attributed to slave dialect in a minstrel show. Probably done in blackface.

The word Juneteenth should be considered very offensive, much like the song “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” or one of Stephen Foster's songs ("Way down upond de Swanee ribber, Far, far away, Dere’s wha my heart is turning ebber, Dere’s wha de old folks stay.”)

I say all this in the spirit of consistency.

Emancipation Day is a holiday in Washington DC to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act, which president Abraham Lincoln signed on April 16, 1862.

Oddly note it is the day after IRS Day celebrations too. LOL.

In my town they decided to hold a Juneteenth parade with cars waving African flags and take this parade all through. Lucky for me I live a a dead end street. Very strange that they were saluting the flags that enslaved them and a continent that still has slave to this day.
I think it’s all a bunch of malarky.

Thank you for the correction.

The real info seems rather less compelling to me than the proclamation itself!

“It is the oldest and longest running tradition to celebrate the end of slavery.”

But, of course, slavery in the United States did not end on June 19. Juneteenth is said to be a celebration about the end of slavery in the Confederate States of America.

And that in this context: The Confederate States of America were defeated by the most powerful slave-owning nation on earth.

My name is based on the AMERICAN REVOLUTION. I know people were not taught that way but the colonists were rebels, and the MD line was the best of them all, and our nickname comes from that very troop.

Yes, I strongly sympathize with the south, at least that they were free to leave, but again, it’s AmRevWar which was a civil war, not the official ACW, which I think is overrated and overcelebrated. As we can see here.

I don’t see why I should recognize this any more than I recognize Cinco de Mayo, which is also local...in MEXICO!

It’s all part of a plan to undermine our great American system.

IF framed in the right manner it's not a bad idea.

It's the day the Army of the Republic under the overall command of Abraham Lincoln (R) made the Emancipation Proclaimation real for slaves held by demoncrats.

The GOP was, and still is, the party of freedom and liberation.

Agreed. But if it gets even state recognition, that would still be the foot in the door.

It both angers and saddens me that even conservatives have bought into it. A renowned conservative writer wrote on Facebook that “Juneteenth” should be celebrated as the day troops from the Republican-led Union freed slaves held by a Democrat regime. I replied that it will more likely be seen as a victory for Antifa/BLM.

Exactly. Never heard of it till I was watching some documentary a few years ago, don’t recall the topic of the doc. My PA husband heard me mention it and was totally lost.

Remind people last year no major media outlet covered the event outside local media in Texas.

ABC had an hour-long special this year. Why didn't they have one last year or in any previous year?

While every media outlet is glorifying JT today none of them mentioned it or recognized it or celebrated it before 2020; and then only when Trump announced he was holding a rally in Tulsa.

Before 2020, the media had no interest in Juneteenth.

BTW my spell check doesn't recognize Juneteenth so my spell check is either racist or the word Juneteenth is used so infrequently it doesn't even make it into an online dictionary.

Seems like the Left want to get rid of the real holidays in favor of holidays for 1% of the population. No thanks.

“Texas was the first state to recognize the date, in 1980.”

40 years later it hasn’t changed things.
