A Walmart spokesperson said Walmart Supercenter Store #359 in Fayetteville is currently
removing all of its traditional belt lines to replace them with self-checkout registers.

I’m totally fine with that. The self checkout stands always have an opening, so no waiting. The cashier stands always have a line, as they only have one or two open at any given time.

Hmmm. For most items you just scan and go. For produce you have to find the banana icon or whatever and push a button. Any moron can do it.

As someone that uses walmart every few days I have no problem scanning items. Occasionally there is a scanner problem or some snafu but it’s rare.

Self checkout is so easy even a monkey can do it. It’s the bagging part I hate.

I can never get produce to work.

It's a process but I know how to do it.

People can’t figure out how to scan bar codes? Seriously?

It is not that simple. What would you do when after you have dutifully put every item in bags on the right hand side of the machine where the scale is checking weight to make sure what you are taking more or less corresponds to what you scanned the machine puts up an error dialog saying there is too much merchandise?

Do you know the code that has to be entered to override the error dialog? I don't, but the store employee did.

It isn't the simple cases that cause problems. It is the edge cases where the bar code scanner can't read the code, or the machine has a malfunction, or any one of 100 other problems occur.

Elimination of wasteful work is true progress.

You are mistaking improvements in productivity for the equally important decision to outsource labor to others.

If the store requires me to invest my time and labor in doing some task it may be that I prefer somebody else to do the task, like the cashier. In the past markets offered many services, and some still do, like loading the groceries into the car for you.

Surely you think a business like Amazon, or PeaPod is an example of progress. In that case you choose to outsource even more of the labor involved in shopping.

The same thing happens in restaurants. People can choose to grow their own food, process it, cook it, and eat it. They can also choose to go to a fast food restaurant and get the food all ready to eat in a bag. Or they can go to a full service restaurant and have a waiter or waitress bring over the food to them. For some people they even choose to pay somebody to park their car for them, and bring it back to the door when they are done eating.

Progress is having all of those choices. Stores that want to limit the choices their patrons have may well find out that using Amazon really is more convenient than shopping at Walmart.

I use self-checkout lanes at several stores. However, I do not use them at Walmart because when I did I could not get through the process without having the clerk come over and assist several times. Their check-out software is garbage.

In a gas station, MY purchases goesinto the gas tank of my vehicle for transport away from the station.

IF I buy bout $200 of items at Walmart-—there isn’t even enough space to put all those items while I continue scanning what I bought. Will I have to take a 2nd cart into that area to place my check items into>

IF Wal Mart doesn’t want my business-—fine.

But I WILL walk away from a loaded cart & they can put it all back on to the shelves.

Even the self-checkout lines usually have a store employee there to help out a customer doesn’t know how to do something, such as ring up fruit and vegetables that don’t have an ID tag. And I think they need to check ID for purchases of alcohol. You usually have to buy cigarettes at the customer service desk; cigarettes are always behind the counter.

Too many people have been unemployed and lost wages, etc

Not everything has a bar code. Produce for one.

Can you check out alcohol (beer/wine/spirits) in the self checkout?

Only with the help of a nearby cashier. The light goes off when scanning those items.
