“Call the ball” is a term of art used by Navy pilots when approaching an aircraft carrier for landing. There is a system of lights that they use to ensure they are not too high or too low on approach to ensure the they can catch the arresting gear while not plowing into the back of the ship. When they approach they are vectored in by a controller until they can see the lights and then have to give positive confirmation or “call the ball” for final approach or be waved off.
