‘We may have to rethink the toilet seat altogether’: How the coronavirus could change bathrooms for the better
Fast Company ^ | 11 May 2020 | LARA SOROKANICH

Posted on 05/13/2020 11:01:35 AM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

Consider that the vast majority of commercial bathrooms in the U.S. don’t even include lids on toilets—meaning that every time someone flushes, a “toilet plume” of droplets explodes into the air, coating the surrounding stall (and the person standing in it) and aerosolizing the bowl’s contents, which can be breathed in and ingested by nearby parties (gross)

We also know that COVID-19 has been found in human poop, up to 33 days after infected people have recovered and tested negative for the virus. No amount of handwashing will remove a virus sprayed all over your body.

“a huge uptick in requests for touchless technologies,” particularly from schools hoping to improve bathrooms before potentially reopening this fall

“People don’t even want to touch a manual flush valve; they kick-flush using their foot,”

a disastrous experiment by the city of Seattle to install self-cleaning public bathrooms—which sprayed disinfectant and power-washed floors after every use (but ended up trapping and hosing down homeless people)

What about RV style toilets? You use a hose to wash out the bowl while opening a valve with a foot pedal. I would think less aerosolized material.

They have the self-cleaning public toilets in Europe, I always thought they were a terrific idea. Unfortunately, our massive population of drug-addled homeless immediately take to using them as crack-houses or places to sleep and so the rest of us can't have them.

They have big manufacturing operations here in the USA. I met their plant manager at a tennis event, he was there with the CEO of a gas company. They use a LOT of natural gas to fire those clay thrones.

That is not a bug. That is a feature.

Get rid of the automatic flush. Not only does it flush about 4 times, but also never when you’re ready for it to flush.

Government trying to fix stuff is like a surgeon operating with poo on his fingers.

"Squat toilets only. And where do they use squat toilets? CHINA where this virus came from."

They are widely in use on the streets of San Fran Nan's district.

You need a Norden bomb sight to use them!

Not needed with the footprint type.

New idea from liberals. Squat toilets only.

Why not, it works in China. And bring your own toilet paper

But no, there's still the flush problem. Airborne liquid, just from a lower level. To avoid the, we need to adopt an American solultion.

specify flush valves with a tall tailpiece

I hope the plumber closely read the specs before running the supply lines.

I’d like to know how to use them. It was never explained in the movie.

Are you a Brit? The only people I know who use WC(Water Closet) are Brits.

I just start cursing and swearing. There’s these convenient toilet paper dispensers that give me TP along with some strange messages about a “verbal morality code”. :)

No, an architect.

We use the term because it refers to a specific plumbing fixture. The generic “toilet” can be imprecise.

My brain must have still been in commercial construction mode...

And when the city crew gets around to cleaning with the high-pressure washer???

Oh no you can't do that. High pressure washers are racist!
