Masks prevent spread of coronavirus: HKU study
Researchers from the University of Hong Kong said people should keep on wearing a face mask in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. They said on Sunday a study using hamsters showed surgical masks are effective in significantly reducing non-contact transmission of the virus.
The university’s microbiologists put two groups of hamsters, one infected with the coronavirus and the other healthy, in two adjacent but different sets of cages, to find out if surgical masks could help prevent the sick hamsters from transmitting the virus to the healthy ones.
They have also installed fans near the cages to create an air flow, which could help transmit the virus.
Three sets of experiments were carried out to test the effectiveness of surgical masks.

I was hoping to see little hamsters wearing masks.
Mandatory testing turned up something one nursing home did not expect
One in three of the positive cases about a half dozen people were asymptomatic and were unknowingly spreading the virus.
DALLAS The state has embarked on a herculean effort to test more than 230,000 residents and staff at Texas 1,224 licensed nursing homes by the end of the month.
This disease is like no other weve treated before. No one presents with the classic signs and symptoms, said Ashley Green, a registered nurse at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas.
The senior care facility where she works started testing about a month before the governor ordered it.
Weve been testing since mid-April, said CEO Tim Mallad.
To date, Presbyterian Village North has tested 922 residents and staff.
Of that population, 20 tests came back positive; 11 were employees and nine were residents.
