Isn't it time we admitted the truth? Face masks aren't about how stopping the virus. They don't do shit the way most people wear them, & everybody knows it. Face masks are talisman for a secular society gripped in a panic. Might as well be a coke bottle dropped from a Piper Cub https://t.co/boFGmlOjQH— Dave's Not Here (@Weirddave0) May 12, 2020

I wuz weedwacking an acre the other day. Wearing a face mask but not for CCP virus, but because of a rather large patch of pineapple chamomile which is very stinky and tends to trigger my asthma. After an hour, I was surprised how wet the mask was. Just normal heavy breathing soaked the front of that mask; I had to change it out about half an acre’s worth. So I can easily see how much water vapor is exhaled just walking about, much less running or some other strenuous exercise or even animated chatter.

For now tho, I’ll be wearing one any time I’m about on the ranch. The idiots across the street from me had a party last weekend - about 15 people. And yesterday one of them, brought her kids to visit with my next door neighbor to the east. I figure about 10 days from now, there’ll be some sick people between the two houses.

China’s trying to hide the CCPVirus cookies under the bed. They might be able to convince their slave population that Wuhan was just a figment of their imaginations, but out here in the real world, they don’t have that kind of control

New Questions for the CCP:

What happened at the Wuhan P4 lab on Oct 6? Where did all the locals disappear to for 3 weeks?

New York barber cutting hair ‘illicitly’ during lockdown tests positive for coronavirus

In a statement Wednesday, the county health commissioner advised anyone who received a haircut in the past three weeks at a barbershop on Broadway in the city of Kingston, about 20 miles north of Poughkeepsie, to seek testing for the coronavirus. The statement did not identify either the barber or the shop.

USS Teddy Roosevelt

At least five sailors who had returned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier have tested positive for coronavirus despite extensive efforts by the US Navy to prevent another outbreak on the ship, according to a US defense official.

...The Navy had instituted several screening procedures to enable those who had recovered to return to the ship following two negative tests.
The official said that one of the sailors suddenly started experiencing symptoms when the sailor returned and the other four that tested positive had been in close proximity to that sailor.

The new cases were first reported by The New York Times.

Coronavirus super-spreader events all have notable similarities — and they reveal the types of gatherings we should avoid for years

...Research shows time and again that the risk of coronavirus spread is much higher indoors, in poorly ventilated spaces in which lots of people have sustained contact. That’s because it primarily spreads via droplets that fly through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks.
A preliminary report from Japanese scientists (which has yet to be peer-reviewed) suggested that the odds an infected person “transmitted COVID-19 in a closed environment was 18.7 times greater compared to an open-air environment.”

INOVIO TRIAL ANNOUNCED - DNA Plasmids

Inovio has enrolled 40 healthy volunteers in its phase 1 trial and expects preliminary data on safety and immune response in late June. Participants are receiving two doses of vaccine, four weeks apart. If results are favorable, the company plans to move on to a phase 2/3 efficacy trial this summer upon regulatory approval.

MODERNA ENTERS PHASE 2 TRIALS - RNA Transcription

Can the coronavirus live on clothes and shoes? And for how long?

LA Times

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/can-the-coronavirus-live-on-clothes-and-shoes-and-for-how-long/ar-BB144Oee?ocid=spartanntp

The article says that the virus can remain viable on clothing about 24 hours, or as little as 5 minutes. And you shouldn’t have to strip and wash your clothes every time you go out unless you’re spending time in hot-zones. Given that, if your house is carpeted, the carpet should also ‘decontaminate’ in 5 min to 24 hours, depending on inside heat, humidity and viral load shed. Hard surfaces take longer to clear. If you don’t take your shoes off, it says to just consider the floor contaminated and if you drop anything on it, make sure you wash your hands and wash/wipe that object. I’d think if you have pets and especially if you have mixed flooring, like kitchen/bathroom tile, you’d do better to just take the shoes off before you come in the house.

P.S. If you live in snake territory, check any shoes left in the mudroom or porch for snakes and spiders and scorpions before you stick your toes in.

LONDON - OPINION - Dan Wootton
excellent commentary on social bubbles. This is a concept we discussed here some weeks ago as a sensible way to ‘reopen’ families and contacts amongst those who have remained uninfected for their 30days or so home quarantine.

From the opinion piece:
“The bubble concept could be life-changing for those struggling with isolation after being separated from partners, their family members and loved ones during lockdown....

Based on the successful New Zealand model, it would allow two house-holds to merge into a bubble to socialise and even share childcare...

...much of the criticism has been levelled by TV presenters and politicians who haven’t even bothered to read the excellent 50-page report that spells it all out in clear detail....

...Here’s the reality: The London liberal media elite and the Opposition are taking the public for fools...But they’re underestimating us...

...The public has performed superbly during lockdown but we understand the next stages will require nuance and a large dose of common sense.

That’s why the social bubble concept was such a triumph in my homeland of New Zealand...in New Zealand there was pride in keeping one’s bubble small, rather than boasting about how many people could be snuck in through the back door.

Despite carping by the left-wing media, the British public have succeeded in lockdown better than anyone in Govern-ment ever imagined we would.

Now they need to repay that faith and accept we will embrace the bubble concept sensibly...

TESTING - 100% ACCURATE ANTIBODY TEST

Breakthrough Roche antibody test to be rushed to NHS staff and carers

The developments raised hopes of “Covid passports” being issued soon to millions of people to show they have had the infection and can return to work to boost Britain’s economy.

...The hotly anticipated news on a reliable antibody test is believed to be a game-changer in the battle against Covid-19.

...People who have only been mildly infected, or have had it asymptomatially, may have limited protection.
Professor Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University, said the Roche test was a “major step forward”.

He added: “If you test positive with this test, you can say for certain you have had the infection so you will have had Covid-19.

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/roche-antibody-test-nhs-staff-carers-a4440486.html

As long as it is used at least 14 days after someone has developed symptoms, it has a 100 per cent sensitivity rate, Roche claims.

VACCINE TRIALS - AstraZeneca/Oxford

...ccording to a report, some of the monkeys given a single shot of the vaccine developed antibodies against the virus within 14 days.

All of them developed protective antibodies within 28 days, before being exposed to high doses of the virus, experts said.

After exposure, the vaccine appeared to prevent damage to the lungs and kept the virus from making copies of itself there, but the virus was still actively replicating in the nose.

The findings, which emerged on Thursday, are only preliminary and have not undergone rigorous review by other scientists.

HELP WANTED:

MARYLAND

The head of a hospital system in Maryland’s Prince George’s County, a majority black community bordering Washington, D.C., said the area’s intensive care units “are bursting at the seams.”
“I would say we are the epicenter of the epicenter,” said Dr. Joseph Wright, interim CEO of University of Maryland Capital Region Health. He said the three emergency departments his medical system operates are steadily seeing upward of 70 new COVID-19 confirmed and suspected patients every day.
“We are certainly still very much in a very busy phase of this surge,” Wright said.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has announced the first stage of reopening beginning Friday evening, but Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said a local order would extend through June 1.

NEW MEXICO

A hospital in Gallup, New Mexico, is on the front lines of a grinding outbreak on the Navajo Nation that recently prompted a 10-day lockdown with police setting up roadblocks to discourage non-emergency shopping.
...The departure last week of the hospital’s lung specialist has limited its ability to treat COVID-19 patients, as people with acute respiratory symptoms are transported to Albuquerque, some two hours away. About 17 nurses were cut from the hospital’s workforce in March, at least 32 workers have tested positive for the virus and its intensive care unit is at capacity.
“My staff is physically exhausted, emotionally exhausted and they are suffering from moral injury,” chief nursing officer Felicia Adams said.

“...an interesting and potentially clinically important finding in the study by de Abajo and colleagues is that the use of RAAS inhibitors compared with other antihypertensive drugs almost halved the risk of adverse outcomes in patients with COVID-19 who had diabetes (adjusted OR 0·53, 95% CI 0·34–0·80).4 Other studies have also suggested that use of RAAS inhibitors might confer protective effects against complications and death in patients with COVID-19 versus other antihypertensive drugs, although these studies were not restricted to patients with diabetes.9, 10
