Corona Virus Daily Thread #50 COVID-19 5/04/2020
This story scares the hell out of me
Thank you very much for the thread, RB.
Nurse who died documents progression. Her cough sounds like what i sometimes get from lisonopril. So dang...how do you tell if you have version of wuhan
with no fever.

This was yesterday on the Highland Lakes. Bleepin' tourists is why our county's numbers keep going up.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
The false positive rate was 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old farts life, it's worth it.
Incredible moment Covidiot explains she has cut a hole in her face mask because it ‘makes it easier to breathe’
Report from the front lines:
My daughter is a nurse in the pediatric ICU at a major hospital in Baltimore (I work for the same hospital). They converted half of the PICU into a COVID ICU for adult patients to help with the load, and she has been taking care of adult COVID patients for the last several shifts. She says the bit about these patients having a lot of blood clots is very real. Their blood is very viscous. She says they’ve never seen anything like it. IVs and other blood processing equipment (e.g., ECMO) are clogging at very high rates.
For the good news, the need to use the PICU for adult patients is declining, and they’re planning on moving them back to adult floors.
She’s no idiot. The law says “Wear a mask when you go into the store.”
The law DOES NOT say “Wear a mask with NO HOLES when you go into the store.”
She knows perfectly well what she’s doing and it’s a form of protest. Lots of research says the masks are of marginal or no value.
Not good. Not good at all. We keep hearing there are more and more complications from this virus.
“Jim Cramer says Buffetts sale of airline stocks makes him very concerned about the near term”
We have a growing pool of people who simply don't have the attention span to "deal with this anymore" and are going back to "regular life".
Dr from Texags has had good luck with the genetech drug stopping the cytokine storm and thinks that is part of the answer...
but that is overall...not specific to the clogging. Scary that it is clogging ECMO machines
Why would healthcare workers wear masks then?
Probably because they are knowingly exposed to infected people with high viral loads who are sneezing and coughing a lot, and spreading droplets and aerosols everywhere.
You really don’t encounter that in casual everyday life where you are in your house most of the time and going to the store for a few minutes every couple of days.
There’s a big difference between everyday life and medical professionals.
Bess Kalb @bessbell He had a patient who needed 8 blood transfusions in a morning even though he wasnt bleeding. The coronavirus was just eating his red blood cells faster than his bone marrow could make them. Its mystifying and brutal.

Oxidative stress is associated with many diseases. Among other cells, platelets in these diseases display oxidative stress, leading to their hyper activation, excess clot formation and development of thromboembolic complications which are a co- morbidity characterizing many diseases.Dec 7, 2018

This is why I keep saying look at thalessemia and sickle cell and malaria to try to find an answer as to how to deal with this. Thalessemia Major requires blood transfusions but that is rarer than Thalessemia minor who just have crappy blood oxygen and all kinds of problems with Medcrams buzzwords...NAPH, GPH, , ROS, SOD,
Many Drs just dont understand thalessemia. I am usually told to take iron..which is exactly what you dont want to to.
Those crazy ferritin numbers that patients are getting is another clue
comment from story:
So why is all of this happening? It may be happening because the virus is taking out ACE2 because it is binding to ACE2 as it binds it maybe taking it out because as it binds to ACE 2 it’s now rendering that enzyme inactive. When ACE2 is down regulated, it can no longer mitigate the effects of angiotensin2 and specifically oxidative stress on the endothilium.ACE2-based treatment approaches may be a novel approach to limit aberrant vascular responses and atherothrombosis.
