So that’s where they went! I assume they eat bugs from the tree bark, but I didn’t realize that they ate regular bird food too.

There’s one little bird here that is so clever. They take a sunflower seed from my feeder and then they stand on the metal rod that is holding the feeder and smack the seed Until It Breaks. At first we thought it was a dumb woodpecker trying to peck into the iron. But no it was a super clever little bird.

Used a different suet cake in the feeders this year and we’ve had a wide variety of woodpeckers. The pilated never come near the house but their thumping is very loud in the forest.

They are raising the bridges in Chicago to control crowds.

I’ve only heard ours in the forest as well. I was surprised when I saw one how tiny they are! They sure make a big noise.
