A Kentucky Family of 7 Didn’t Practice Social Distancing. Now Child Services Is Investigating the Parents for Abuse.
according to Jim Mason of the Home School Legal Defense Association, who blames the false report on panic over COVID-19 social distancing rules. A letter from child services, obtained by Reason confirmed the existence of the complaint.
The parents, referred to as “Bill and Kristy,” are homeschoolers. Kristy had moved to Kentucky in advance of Bill, who had remained in New York City finishing up work. When they arrived at the bank, the parents opted to let the two oldest children wait in the car. The other five had to accompany them into the building, which had a COVID-19 warning sign on the door. They were not treated warmly, writes Mason:
The teller immediately interrogated Bill and Kristy about why they had brought five kids into the bank at one time. She [the teller] told them they could not get within six feet of her and that they needed to take the children out. Kristy explained that the children were too young to be left unsupervised by an adult, and neither she nor Bill could take them elsewhere because the couple were opening a joint account, and both had to be present.
While Bill stayed with the children away from the counter, Kristy opened the account, feeling self-conscious as the staff whispered to each other and watched her family suspiciously. When Bill walked to the counter to show his New York ID and to sign, the bank staff asked why Bill’s and Kristy’s identifications were from different states, which the couple explained.
Back at home, the authorities confronted Bill and Kristy, who discovered that someone had called in an anonymous tip claiming that a mother of five had taken her children out with a man who wasn’t their dad, and they had bruises on their arms that indicated rough grabbing.
The investigator proceeded to question the kids away from the parents, and he made at least one of the boys take off his shirt to look for bruises. Kristy told Mason that the investigator wanted to do the same with the girls, but she objected, so he only pulled up the girls’ sleeves and took photos.
Already, there’s a problem: If the kids were wearing long sleeves (it was a cold day), how had anyone spotted bruises? Of course, the caller got other information wrong, too: Bill was very much the kids’ father.
When I spoke with Mason by phone, he explained the idea of an “off ramp.” In theory, he said, once an investigator gets to a home, checks for the supposed crime and comes up empty handed, he or she should turn around and leave—i.e., take the off ramp. Anything else “is such a terrible thing and a waste of time.”
But all too often, investigators insist that they must robotically keep probing: opening cabinets, looking in the fridge, questioning kids. This Kentucky investigator even questioned the family about which homeschool curriculum they were using, as if that had some bearing on the case.

A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to at least 6 years in jail for stealing cash from an American Legion and for lying about his military service.
Christopher Crawford was found guilty of stealing more than $16,000 from the American Legion in Scranton, WNEP reported.
He also said he had been injured by a bomb in Iraq. He did not serve overseas, instead, he deserted shortly after entering boot camp, WNEP reported.
Crawford used the post’s debit cards to make unauthorized purchases and ATM withdrawals without permission, Army Times reported.
American Legion Post 568 members noticed the issue when checks were bouncing, WOLF reported.
But it wasn’t only the money that hurt the former military members. The post commander told WOLF that it was the stolen valor aspect that angered him.

Coronavirus Patients’ Risk of Death Could Be Predicted 10 Days Early

With more than 320,000 deaths across the globe due to COVID-19, doctors have struggled to identify why some people get fatally ill, while others have light to no symptoms of the novel coronavirus. Now, thanks to a new study, doctors may be able to predict a patient’s risk of death due to COVID-19 up to ten days before.
According to the study published last week in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence, researchers created a model that examines three biological markers found in coronavirus patients’ blood that could indicate whether a patient could become seriously ill more than ten days ahead of time, with 90% accuracy.
Researchers hailed the new clues as a crucial way to distinguish “the vast majority of cases that require immediate medical attention.” The study’s authors wrote that their model is able to provide a “simple and intuitive clinical test to precisely and quickly quantify the risk of death.”
Doctors have known for awhile now that people with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of contracting a fatal version of COVID-19, however, using the biological markers can give medical personnel a heads up on which patients would require more drastic treatment.
In order to identify the common biological markers that indicate the higher risk of dying from the coronavirus, researchers analyzed blood samples taken repeatedly from 485 coronavirus patients at Tongi Hospital in Wuhan, China, between Jan. 10 and Feb. 18. Researchers tested the blood samples for a variety of kidney, heart and other blood-clotting issues, noting whether those patients survived or died. The researchers then used a machine-learning algorithm to look for patterns in the biological markers.
According to the study, researchers found that:
1) High levels of an enzyme called lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), which is associated with lung damage and tissue breakdown seen in pneumonia cases.
2) Low levels of lymphocytes - the white blood cells that work to keep the body clear of invading pathogens like the coronavirus.
3) An increase in high-sensitivity C-reactive proteins. Those can indicate inflammation in the lungs.
If a patient presents with all three markers, researchers say their computer model can predict how likely those hospital patients will die from COVID-19 up to ten days in advance.
“The three key features, LDH, lymphocytes and hs-CRP, can be easily collected in any hospital,” the researchers wrote in the study. “In crowded hospitals, and with shortages of medical resources, this simple model can help to quickly prioritize patients, especially during a pandemic when limited healthcare resources have to be allocated.”
A second study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Tuesday, appears to back up the researchers’ findings. The study published in the AMA Journal looked at ten biomarkers that could help doctors asses patients’ risk levels of becoming critically ill, or dying from COVID-19.
Two of the biomarkers overlapped with the second study, including high levels of LDH and the high neutrophil to lymphoctye ratio (which is associated with lower levels of lymphocytes).
Other risk factors included a history of cancer, high number of preexisting conditions, older age, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, unconsciousness, abnormal chest X-rays, and high levels of bulirubin - which can indicate liver damage.
Using those biomarkers, researchers created an online “coronavirus risk calculator” that could help predict which patients will become critically ill from COVID-19.
“If the patient’s estimated risk for critical illness is low, the clinician may choose to monitor, whereas high-risk estimates might support aggressive treatment or admission to the ICU,” they said.
