10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Classic Rock
whatculture.com ^ | April 26, 2020

Singers tend to receive a bad reputation when it comes to rock and roll. Many people think that these guys just have a lucky break by making a living screaming into a microphone. On the other side, there have been many vocalists that have really shown the time and effort that goes into singing rock and roll.

A lot of people tend to forget that the voice is an instrument unto itself, and all of these singers utilize that instrument to its fullest potential. These songs not only showcase the intensity of the person's singing, but also the unique control of their range. Some of these tunes don't even feature one vocalist, but a vocal team working in conjunction with each other to create something truly spectacular.

Above all, these performances show these singers as fully functioning musicians, who put their heart and soul into their craft to make magic come out of their vocal cords. Sure, they might not be playing a guitar or tearing up the drums, but the sheer power coming from the back of their throat will make your hair stand up on end.

Women get overlooked in rock but they have put out some great rock tunes over the years.

Stevie's vocals melt me like butter.

Shoot... Didn’t see the rock and roll qualifier there. Just swap all non-rock songs on my list with anything by Shinedown, Maiden and/or JP.

Pages meandering 25 minute “solos” didnt help...but Plant way over sang his own songs...kinda of similar to what the ones today do with the national anthem at the Super Bowl...

The road band used by Jay and the Americans (Jay Black) included a couple of guys named Donald Fagen & Walter Becker.

I think they (Fagen & Becker) tried to start a band of their own but “settled” for studio musicians.

I just can’t recall the name of that band...

I’ll throw in Janis Joplin’s “Piece of my Heart”

If I went with Janis, I'd go with "Cry Baby"

"John Lennon...Best rock voice in the business."

Good, but best?
Now I'm a big Beatles/Lennon fan, but none of them were bluesy like Allman or Cocker, or powerful like Elvis or Burdon. Or even melodic like Van Morrison.

Harry Nilsson - Jump Into the Fire. That’s a pretty awesome vocal.

Nope. Just my favorite band. But I have shaken hands with Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar. And I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

All I can think of when I hear that is Henry Hill getting chased by the helicopter.

Not nearly as good as his "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"....

Agreed. Lennon might be one of the best writers in the business. But far from one of the best vocalists.

He isn’t a rock artist, but I think John Denver deserves a mention. He sang well, used accompaniment sparingly and it never hid or overpowered his voice. He was a very good songwriter and all of his lyrics can be clearly understood. Usually just his voice and his guitar in front of thousands of people. That takes courage.
