Reopening of America accelerates as states prepare to relax coronavirus restrictions

Ready or not, America is opening back up.

The process that began in recent days with back-in-business nail salons and unbarred sandy beaches in a scattering of states is poised to accelerate over the coming week across wide swaths of the country. After shutting down much of American life in March and keeping people home throughout April, governors are preparing to lift restrictions as the calendar turns to May — and cross their fingers that the novel coronavirus doesn’t come roaring back.

In Tennessee, customers will be able to sit down for meals in restaurants starting Monday. In Missouri, the coming week will be the last before the state allows “almost every business” to reopen. And in Idaho, churches and other places of worship could be unlocking their doors by next weekend.

The easing will not be universal and is cleaved largely along party lines, with some Republican governors moving to reopen key sectors and Democrats moving more slowly. In states such as New York, where covid-19 has exacted its heaviest toll, there is no letup to the rules in sight. Even in places where restrictions are being relaxed, governors have emphasized the need to proceed cautiously, lest they unleash a second wave.

Abbott is acting like an old woman. You can’t lock up a State because some people may die.

We’ve got about a week until Washington State’s lockdown is supposed to be lifted. I’m wondering if Commissar Inslee is going to ‘pull out the football’ before next Monday and increase the length of the lockdown. It certainly would follow his M.O. if he did.

“We simply cannot open everything all at once and reverse the good work we have done collectively over the past month to slow the spread of coronavirus,” Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R) said in a statement announcing his state’s plans.

Little may have just become a one-term wonder. It is, however, interesting that the WaPo suddenly is quoting Republican governors right and left for the first time in a long time. Count the (R)'s in that article. Clearly that editorial staff has decided that if lockdowns piss people off at Trump they're a good thing. Two months from now they'll be spinning on a dime and calling them fascism and xenophobia again. Watch it happen.

Crossing their fingers is an apt description since everything they have done so far has been based on a computer-modeled modern superstition.

I just watched Chris Wallace grilling the Governor of Oklahoma on opening his state. The governor explained the risks, nobody is forced to reopen, and Chris just kept it up with his negative questions. A fair minded journalist would have closed the interview with a wish of good luck...but it’s obvious that Chris Wallace wants to see increased Oklahoman deaths and a crumbling of their economy. Chris Wallace speaks like an enemy of the people.

The “15 days to slow the spread” should be the guidelines happening now. Hospitals are not overwhelmed. Vulnerable able people can self-quarantine as can anyone else who so chooses. Vulnerable people who cannot take care of themselves, such as those in nursing homes, should be given extra protection.

As a fellow Washingtonian, I believe you to be correct about Inslee. He enjoys, too much, his foot on our necks.

https://www.newjerseynewsnetwork.com/story/42055374/the-latest-montana-churchgoers-return-to-in-person-services

LAUREL, Mont. - Montana took its first, halting step toward reopening as churchgoers returned to services after a month-long hiatus and a general stay-at-home order expired.

While other states have been extending restrictions amid the continuing spread of the coronavirus, Montana is among those that are beginning to loosen rules in hopes of restoring battered economies and regaining some normalcy.

Roughly 100 people streamed into St. Anthony Catholic Church in Laurel on Sunday, where ushers tried to keep families separate from one another and large bottles of hand sanitizer were on offer at the sanctuary’s entrance. Church member Jack Auzqui says being unable to attend had been spiritually difficult for him and his wife. Returning, he said, was akin to a family being reunited.
