Giraldus Cambrensis wrote about the lake in his book about journeying through Wales in the late 12th century, reporting the local tradition that the birds in the area only ever sang for a truly Welsh prince or ruler...
As this 'house on the lake' was one of several royal houses belonging to the rulers of Brycheiniog... The crannog at Llangorse, in effect an artificial island, measures about 40 metres in width and is situated 30 or 40 metres off the northern shore of the lake...
Timbers from the wooden palisade that used to surround the island have been dated to come from between 889 and 993 AD but as several of these pieces of wood had been used on earlier buildings it is hard to be too precise with dates...
The demise of the crannog at Llangorse is a little unclear. Relations between Alfred the Great's English territories and Brycheiniog deteriorated in the wake of Alfred's death and in 916 AD Aethelflaed, the daughter of Alfred, sent an army into the Welsh kingdom. A number of burnt timbers have been found in the crannog and it is possible that the island was attacked and its defenders put to the sword by the English army.
Certainly the crannog was never rebuilt by Twedwr ap Elisedd, the ruler of Brycheiniog at the time, and in due course Brycheiniog became part of the kingdom of Deheubarth. What is left is an amazing archaeological site, the only known crannog to have yet been discovered in Wales.

I set up this file on the 20th, a couple of days after the last Digest, and we've had eleven topics already. Not bad. Here are the other GGG topics introduced since the previous Digest ping:
Interesting
She and Uhtred always have each other's backs, though they're not romantically involved.
"My name is Uhtred, son of Uhtred. I was born an ealdorman of Northumbria, the rightful heir to Bebbanburg. But fate decreed I would be raised as a Dane. That was my life... Until my family was murdered."
In the book series by Bernard Cornwell, Aethelfled and Uhtred do become romantically involved after her jerk of a husband dies-and they remain lovers until her death-I just ordered the latest book in the series-hope it is as good a read as all the others have been...
:^) She's my aunt about 35 generations back. :^)
I do love TIMELINE. I have probably seen them all!
I agree. :^) What happened was, that TT episode was on deck on the other computer, and I finally clicked play. I haven't watched the Michael Wood thing yet, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Wood regards Alfred as the greatest ever Englishman (and he does so in agreement with Churchill), and discusses that a bit in that video I linked, uh, where did it go... Here.
You watch the TeeVee series The Last Kingdom? It's pretty good.
I watch it when BBCA has it on-they are usually a few months behind streaming service-I think it follows the books very well, so far-the Brits are much better with historical facts in their productions than Hollyweird is-watching a historical series made in America by an American studio is just watching pure fiction-a lot of the historical series on BBCA and History Channel are shot in Canada for the most part-Vikings is one that is...
I'm still fumin' that not one dime of the royal purse made it down this far.
I love Timeline and Time Team too and I think Ive watched every Time Team episode at least two or three times, or more. I find Phil Harding strangely sexy. Or someone Id really like to share a pint with at a pub after going on a long field walk : ),
Looks like a to-do.
Just noticed that he wrote the Sharpe series.
You’ll enjoy this the most from about the 24 minute mark then:
Walking through History The Path to Stonehenge

Perhaps some day we can eat a Leek together...
When St. David’s day comes again.
For me, I love Waldemar Januszczak. He has a sort of whimsical way of presenting, although I love them all!
There was an 'English army's in the tenth century? What happened to Arthur and the Britons?
:^) By the 10th c, 'Arthur' had been dead for centuries.
