Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) was one of the most famous painters of what's called "veduta", a genre of painting that specializes in cityscapes. Probably using a "camera obscura", he was able to create highly accurate depictions of the various cities that he was active in, ranging from Rome in Italy, to Dresden in Germany, and Warsaw in Poland. His paintings provide us with a glimpse into 18th century Europe.

I haven’t seen any photographs from the 18th century. And as the video shows, cityscapes have changed dramatically even if some buildings survive.

Thanks for the link. I’m sure I’ve walked sightless past at least several of Bellotto’s paintings. It won’t happen again.

Note: this topic is from 11/10/2019. Thanks NRx. I suspect all of us who are homebound through this, uh, crisis (political crisis) enjoy shaking up the topics that get pinged to GGG.

GGG significantly enriches my life, especially now that I am retired and almost chairbound.

Didn’t have to change a thing to self-quarantine, except that I’m not seeing my grandchildren as much.
