A New Jersey driver crashed head-on into a pole after passing out from wearing an N95 mask for hours, police said Friday.
Lincoln Park Police believe that the driver, who was not named, lost consciousness while behind the wheel Thursday from lack of oxygen and breathing in excessive carbon dioxide thanks to the mask, the department wrote on Facebook.
The LPPD responded to a lone occupant single car motor vehicle crash yesterday. The crash is believed to have resulted from the driver wearing an N95 mask for several hours and subsequently passing out behind the wheel due to insufficient oxygen intake/excessive carbon dioxide intake, the cops wrote.
We also know that nothing was uncovered at the accident scene that would suggest that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
While we dont know [the cause] with 100% certainty, we do know that the driver had been wearing an N95 mask inside the vehicle for several hours and ultimately passed out while operating the vehicle, the department said.
Police told residents that while they should continue to follow Gov. Phil Murphys guidelines for wearing face coverings in public, wearing an N95 mask while driving with no other occupants is unnecessary.

Why would you wear a mask alone in your own vehicle?
Considering the overwhelming response this post has received, the following should be said. NJ residents should absolutely continue to follow the directives regarding face coverings put in place by our Governor. As it relates to this specific incident, we reiterate that police officers are not physicians and do not know the medical history of every person we encounter. We conduct accident scene investigations using training, experience and observations at the scene to determine a cause. It was stated in the original post that we "believed" the excessive wearing of an N95 mask was a contributing factor to this accident. While we don't know this with 100% certainty, we do know that the driver had been wearing an N95 mask inside the vehicle for several hours and ultimately passed out while operating the vehicle. We also know that nothing was uncovered at the accident scene that would suggest that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. All this being said, It is certainly possible that some other medical reason could've contributed to the driver passing out. We are not trying to cause public alarm or suggest wearing an N95 mask is unsafe. The original point of the post was to state that in most cases, the wearing of this type of mask while operating a vehicle with no other occupants is unnecessary.

Motorists and the public alike are reminded that while masks should be used in public settings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, they are not necessary outdoors when social distancing can be maintained, and especially not necessary when driving a vehicle with no additional occupants. #besafe #PSA #motorvehiclecrash #covid19 #lppd

They watch too much fake news? I see people in masks alone in their car driving all the time.
Surgical masks (such as the one in that picture) are just as effective for most purposes as are N95s. Save the N95s for specialized health care tasks that specifically require them - they are in very short supply.
The driver was under the influence of ignorance. Apparently everybody is OK, except for the understanding of when, and where to wear a mask.
LOL I have asked the same question, or why are they wearing a mask our running where no one is.
I personally cannot wear a mask due to my asthma which gets worse. That is another obama screw up when he banned a certain asthma medicine because he said it is polluting the environment
You really need one with a vent for exhaling. It doesnt much protect others, but it is a lot easier to breathe through.
I see them too and just laugh at how stupid they are, and how they just cannot use common sense.
Notice how if the vehicle is not an SUV the driver gets the blame?
I had a similar problem with a bandanna and coffee filter in the store.
I can’t really wear it for any length of time without feeling like I’m going to pass out, especially as the basket gets heavier and I get to check out and bagging them.
I know all the workers in masks aren’t breathing easy either.
Why would you wear a mask alone in your own vehicle?
Because you can’t fix stupid!
Because the State told him to. Big Brother is all wise, all knowing.
New Jersey Democrat = Stupid
I didn't read far enough to see if he won a Darwin award, and killed himself.
“The Accident (Things Could Be Worse)”
John Prine
Last night I saw an accident
On the corner of Third and Green
Two cars collided and I got excited
Just being part of that scene
It was Mrs. Tom Walker and her beautiful daughter
Pamela, was driving the car
They got hit by a man in a light blue sedan
Who had obviously been to a bar
[Chorus:]
They don’t know how lucky they are
They could have run into that tree
Got struck by a bolt of lightning
And raped by a minority
It was a four way stop dilemma
We all arrived the same time
I yielded to the man to the right of me
And he yielded it right back to mine
Well, the yield went around and around and around
Till Pamela finally tried
Just then the man in the light blue sedan
Hit Pamela’s passenger side
[Chorus]
Pamela hit her head on the mirror
Mrs. Walker got a bump on the knee
The man hit himself in the face and said
“Why does this happen to me?”
The neighbors came out
And they gathered about
Saying “Hey! who hit who anyway?”
And the police arrived at a quarter to five
And pronounced all the victims “Okay”
We should stop making people wear those stupid masks!!!
So my homemade Hefty N100 mask would be bad to use while driving?
LOL That me think it could have been worse... if it was at a Round-A-Bout!
Cooties coming in the air ducts?
Tell that to the idiots that make up half the drivers I see when I’m out on the road.
Because they were born stupid and never could overcome the gap, or they deliberately worked at it in order to become stupid.
