John Prine, who for five decades wrote rich, plain-spoken songs that chronicled the struggles and stories of everyday working people and changed the face of modern American roots music, died Tuesday at Nashvilles Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was 73. The cause was complications related to COVID-19, his family confirmed to Rolling Stone.
Prine, who left behind an extraordinary body of folk-country classics, was hospitalized last month after the sudden onset of COVID-19 symptoms, and was placed in intensive care for 13 days.

Covid19 will be the official cause of the death of John Prine but his overall medical condition was probably as much to blame. RIP John, you were one of a kind.
Was he in Captain Hook?
No, you are not
Can’t say I know of him...............
“He lived a good long life but it looks like every single death is now going to be counted as CV19 related”
Just the ones caused by it.
What do you benefit by staying in denial at this point? Is it to allay your own anxiety?
I heard that he had battled cancer and I can imagine that he was in a weakened state. His song I Get Drunk Most Every Night (if that’s the right title) was the first song I sang years ago when first learning to sing. Never thought I’d see this tonight. RIP.
#13. Prine also performed at the National Folk Festival held at Wolf Trap Park about 1973-75. Saw him perform along with Mike Seeger (and his group), David Bromberg, and John Lee Hooker.
Got to interview Libby Cotton (”Freight Train”). A delightful lady and old school singer/writer.
Those were the days. All the talent from then will be missed.
Thank You
I was kayaking in the Asheville, NC, area during APR 1981. During a shuttle run, 2 fellow paddlers in the car put on a Prine tape. “Paradise” was on it. Been hooked ever since. Saw him as the warm-up act for Bonnie Riatt in Raleigh around 1993 and at City Stages in Birmingham around 2001. Godspeed John Prine. You will be missed.
Throat cancer and then lung cancer.
Mysteriously, death from pneumonia is way down this year.
I suppose you think they are lying. Of course, the conspiratorial crazies are never far.
RIP John Prine. Thanks for the music.
She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal
Well she pressed her chest against me
About the time the juke box broke
Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke
Chorus:
Blow up your TV throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own
Thank You John
RIP

He did recover from throat cancer about 20 years ago. So the cancer was in remission but of course remission does not mean cured.
No. You’re not.
So sad. I saw him in concert only once but love his music. He may be the most evocative songwriter of his generation. I sang The Great Compromise to my wife earlier today. Maybe John heard me too.
Saw him at Passim in Harvard Square just after his first album was released. Amazing song-writer singer and an old soul. RIP
