Jewish communities in NY continue to hold religious gatherings despite orders
ABC News ^ | April 7, 2020 | Staff

The centuries-old premium Jewish communities place on religious gatherings is running headlong into the need for isolation amid the unyielding coronavirus pandemic.

Like other religious institutions, Jewish communities around the country are attempting to adapt their traditions to government guidance designed to protect against the virus' spread, like holding online services and gatherings: virtual prayer in the wake of the current epidemic. But in and around New York, authorities complain that, far from discouraging gatherings, a few Orthodox Jewish leaders are leading prayer groups, celebrations and receptions that have been specifically prohibited by emergency orders in both New York and New Jersey.

I don't know anything about the man. (I had to look up his name after reading your post.)

I only mention him to demonstrate the number of people he has had contact with who also have the Coronavirus; his beliefs are irrelevant to my point.

"Point of order ... what is an NK?"

Neturei Karta

Living proof there are plenty of stupid Jews.

And for clarity, the NK are technically Litvish, not Hasidic.

There is considerable overlap between the two groups in dress and custom and (in general) many beliefs, but it’s far too complex to discuss in this forum.

The general public (even Jewish people) sees “Jewish guys in black suits” and thinks we are all the same; this is untrue.

“Not sure where you get the BS that we are all welfare queens.”

You really are picking an un-necessary fight here.

word by word:
“Not sure” filler, doesn’t really count.
“where you get the BS that” NYS & Rockland County published statistics.
“We” you put yourself into the group, I didn’t. or is that the grouping and isolation I pointed out?.
“all welfare queens.” I didn’t use that term, grouping or conclusion.

Hasidic and Haredi are not the same.
For the most part, Haredi don’t serve in the military, like some other groups in the US.
For MANY Hasidic families, large families and low income qualify them for social services.
They live together for many reasons, resulting in very poor communities.

That some folks choose to serve, to protect us all, is a blessing many of us can never repay.

That you paper over an obvious example in Rockland county, and other areas, when confronted with issues surrounding incorporation of strict orthodox Jewry into the larger American community is just as it looks; an attempt at obfuscation.

I have every right to expect that the State’s reasonable rules and regulations

Yup. Morover you have the right to take whatever precautions you deem prudent no matter what anyone else thinks of them. The driver of caution for most people is their sense of risk. None of this is in play today. The economy has been shut down to an extent beyond what was done in the past for far more deadly bugs. If we had done what we have done for past bugs you’d be doing what you’re doing and I’d be working. Now we’re all doing what you’re doing without any choice whatsoever.

Yes, and people (including me) use various terms interchangeably to refer to “black coat Jews”, when they are really very different, albeit all Orthodox

Think of a Venn diagram:

Orthodox is the large circle.

One part is modern Orthodox. They adhere to the Torah and wear a kippah, but typically do not wear a black coat. It’s the largest group of Orthodox and includes most Mizrahim (Jews from the Muslim countries). Among this group are the Religious Zionist — I was raised in that group in Gush Katif, Israel.

Also inside that circle are what I will call “black coat” Jews — Jews that look Amish.

Inside the black coat group are several smaller, sometimes, overlapping groups: Haredi, Hasidic (think Chabad)) and several others.

Hasidic include Chabad. My wife is from a Hasidic family and I adopted the “black coat” dress out of respect for her family. (Although most of my working day is spent in a flight suit.)

Inside the Haredi group are the NK, Satmar, and various other Litvik groups.

The culty groups that cause problems for Israel tend to come from the Haredi subset of the “black coat” Jews.

Anyway, this is a gross oversimplification and partially wrong for simplicity. But it should help you.

“sadly it is no longer. The churches on the left continue to hold their daily sacrifices in abortuaries, the pot shops are open, subways and public transit remain open but religious services are proscribed and vilified.”

BINGO.

“Knowing what we know about the potential for any individual to infect a complete stranger (with the possibility of deadly repercussions), then nobody has any business ignoring a reasonable directive from the civil authorities to avoid these gatherings.”

It isn’t just a “gathering”. It’s the High Holy Days for many religions. And too many secular powers are dictating that the religious not gather for a day to celebrate a religious “gathering” that is integral to their religion. We are turning into a nation of Sheeple, letting the “powers that be”, many of whom do not have our best interests at heart, dictate the minutiae of our lives. I for one am thoroughly sick of it.

One day this nightmare destruction of our way of life and our economy is going to come to an abrupt end, and that day is soon if President Trump has something to do with it, and he does. It may very well happen all at once. Does that mean the next day when people gather throughout our Country again, that suddenly all at once, it is all right to once again gather, because that is exactly what is going to happen. Not okay one day, okay the next.

Right now we are all being channeled into the few places that are still open, such as the grocery stores as we must eat, right? So we are herded all together into places like Walmart and the like, where we can all infect each other or catch the virus off of all of the stocked food/supplies on the shelves where the virus can live for hours. What fools we are to think that by just wearing a mask, or avoiding each other like the plague is going to save us all from the virus when their is a multitude of ways one can contract it.

Our Country, just like all the other countries around the world, will have to once again mill about with our fellow man, as no economy can sustain closing down for months on end. Let the virus play itself out, as all of them do, take necessary precautions in your own lives to minimize its effects to you and your loved ones, but for heaven sakes don’t destroy your own Country, cause infinite more pain to your fellow man by destroying livelihoods, causing physical and mental pain to so many, and in the end, life will go on anyhow and we will have to get back to some sense of normalcy.

People die, most of them old and/or with other underlying ailments; you can’t save everyone while destroying even more people in the process. I am right in the category of those most at risk, older, I have co-morbidities (what an awful concept); I’m right in the ballpark of one who if infected could have a very bad go of it. But I refuse to whine, I have absolutely no desire to ruin our Country for the rest of us in order to save my own hide. I’ll take that risk in order that the Country as a whole doesn’t sink into a Great Depression, with all of its attendant problems, both physical and mental.

Good grief folks, stiffen up those spines and stop being led around by the nose by the “alleged” experts such as Fauci and Birx who are Clinton/Obama lovers with an agenda, and a bunch of models that are proven wrong over and over again. While the MSM/Dems/fascists scare the heck out of what is an increasingly willing to be led around by the nose populace. I for one refuse to subscribe further to such submissive cowering. I will fight for our freedom from those that are using the coronavirus as an excuse to terrorize, bully, and misuse their power in order to control and further subjugate us.

This is not the America I know and love. Time to fight back and retrieve our dignity and sanity against those that would destroy our way of life. There are those amongst us that do not have our best interests at heart while they pretend that they do. Practice further self deception at the risk of you and your Country’s peril.

Corrections, for what it’s worth:

their = there, and infinite = infinitely in the below paragraphs. There, I feel infinitely better now:

Cuomo has banned car parades, too.

And then government wonders why citizens flip them the bird.

Yep....Ultra-Orthodox/Hasidic communities see themselves as the direct, true and historical descendants of Gods chosen people. Like the Islamic sects who see themselves as direct descendants of Muhammad and hold to their extreme beliefs and lifestyles, or Roman catholics who believe they are the only and original true church.

I suspect many within these believe their God will protect them if they gather together....forgetting God's warning as it is written, 'You shall not test the Lord, your God'.

Yes God will protect us and guide us in making 'the right choices'..... but does that mean you’re going to put yourself in a dangerous situation?

What you don’t do is put yourself in the face of danger and say God work your magic. You didn’t put me here I’m putting myself in this situation now show yourself....

I was responding to another poster....which had nothing to do if or not religious groups were Christian or not...it’s apparent you likely missed the point.
