What good is a cotton mask, except as a fashion statement.

It sure doesn’t stop dust very well, let alone a virus.

I live near Austin. This is very disturbing given that I don’t think we are going to turn into Italy. Anything less should not involve selecting in advance who lives and who dies. Is there anything more you can tell me about it?

Agreed—I can’t seem to article focusing on the surgical masks—so I don’t know how long it will take for those to be readily available for all Americans.

I think the surgical masks are now starting to become available.

Just today I had a relative offer me some for $1 a piece. These are from her workplace. I took 20.

“Ah well, gotta trust they know what they’re doing.”

Don’t bet on it. Austin is populated with some real idiots.

OMG!

How many effing nursing homes have to be taken out before these people get a clue?

Unbelievable!

Is this guy confusing N95 masks with surgical masks?

Just saw the Mayor Of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, blaming Trump for failing to cancel Mardi Gras!

You’ve got to be kidding me!

Gottlieb is recommending surgical masks for the public.

Yeah, I agree but...

A medical pro should keep an eye on them at least, “Telemedically” at least.
And also ensure they are isolating effectively.

“mild” may have been misunderstood by me.

The problem occurs IF the hospital runs out of ventilators. That is the worst case scenario.

Only in that case, the hospital decides who will benefit the most. That will not be the elderly with pre-existing conditions.

So seniors with multiple comorbidities and mild symptoms will be sent home without being tested. Even if time is critical for the quinine/zinc treatment to be effective.

This is denial of effective treatment to seniors - they'll only be tested, and therefore qualify for treatment, when most to almost all of them are beyond hope. And then they'll be admitted to use far more expensive, and scarce, ICU resources which will be wasted on them at that point. It's typical bureaucratic "penny wise and pound foolish."

"... milder cases are to be sent home to self isolate. Reasoning is a positive test result will not change the medical decision making. Milder symptoms won’t be admitted to the hospital if test results are positive or negative ..."
This does look like a countrywide medical standard, not just the City of Austin's. At least they're telling us up front that we're on our own. Those of us seniors who survive will remember that in November.

Even those with a family to feed can be still for two weeks if it means protecting our first responders. Especially with money in the mail. Food delivery and distribution to food banks kicking into gear and hopefully local grocers remain open. Stay home and eat. Learn a new skill. If (most of) Calif can do it, NYC should be able to ace it. We get out of this and jobs will be raining.

What good is a cotton mask, except as a fashion statement.

It sure doesn’t stop dust very well, let alone a virus.

This is the misconception that people have to understand.

The masks for everyone don’t have to be able to stop a virus from getting in. They need to stop a virus from getting out!

Simple surgical masks will stop (mostly) the wearer from spreading the virus. If everyone wears one, the spread of the virus will be slowed significantly.

Everyone doesn’t need an N95 mask. Only healthcare workers need these!

If everyone else can wear a simple surgical mask all the time, they will not be able to spread the virus even if they are asymptomatic and don’t know they have the virus.

It stops the mild cases/asymptomatic cases from spreading it (as much).

Did they indicate in the email that there might be a shortage of ventilators or was it just stating standard protocol in such situations? I am only concerned that they are anticipating something we don’t know.

Luckily, after some pressure, Adler cancelled SXSW or we would already be in a bad way.

I’m out of breath trying to explain this.
