Amid ever-changing models, it's hard to put a finger on just how dangerous the coronavirus is.
We know at this point that COVID-19 the disease caused by the coronavirus has led to more than 85,356 illnesses and more than 1,246 deaths in U.S.
For comparison, the flu has caused an estimated 38 million illnesses, 30,000 hospitalizations and 23,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
(snip)
When it comes to lives claimed by the opioid epidemic, for example, in 2018, the most recent year available from the CDC, nearly 47,000 died from opioid-related causes. That accounts for the majority of drug overdose deaths in the U.S. numbering above 67,000.

Bad, but not as wide spread as regular flu. Not nearly the fatality rate as SARS or MERS.
Graphic at link.
Ugh. This is brutal. It isn’t even close to being as deadly as the current flu or opioid ODs. Of course, if Trump acknowledges these numbers and opens the country back up, the media will scream he doesn’t care about the people / grandmothers, etc, that he cares more about money than the American people.. blah blah and then they will trumpet every single new case and death in the headlines.
More proof we’re being played!
President Trump MUST change directions. Quarantine those most compromised and let the rest of America get back to work. (I have a feeling this is in the works.)
The WORLD needs us; we are the Economic Engine of the world!
The mortality rate different should get your attention. And around here, number of cases is doubling every 2 days or so. Ugly.
I agree, Trump is in a difficult position. It is mainly because most in the media want him to fail.
“...the media will scream he doesnt care about the people / grandmothers, etc...”
Of course you’re right about that, but I’ll also bet that his approval numbers keep climbing if he does put us back to work in another week or so.
I’m Retired and even *I* want to go back to work, LOL!
We know that the china virus epidemic is unique in that it is the first to be transmitted by radio and television.
Ugh, I am not touching this one again today. I just finished a debate thread on this and got the old personal attack thing thrown at me. Only thing I will say is:
It is possible to believe that is a serious and deadly pandemic AND question the response and ask for some context with previous pandemics.
Difference, not different.
I think his strategy of going county by county on reopening is a good one. If he can say “these counties have no infection risk”, it will be hard for the media to scream about it. Of course, NYC will likely be closed until after the election (which is fine with me). I am being somewhat sarcastic but who knows with the way things are going there?
Massive testing in Iceland shows that many infected show no symptoms or mild symptoms. Those don’t get factored into the denominator in the US mortality calculations or in the calculations of most other countries.
How dare you add some more perspective - those who have become addicted to angst don’t like that....
How does it fare when compared to the number shot and killed in Chicago?
Im sure I can live my life without overdosing on opioids.
I have 100% control over that.
See that little green slice?
“Of course, if Trump acknowledges these numbers and opens the country back up,”
He cannot. He has to play the game now. The MSM/DNC won, they set this trap and all he can do is be smart and fight his way out. He did a great job of pivoting when he could see there was no other way but he is walking a tight rope and everyone is throwing things at him. The fact that millions of Americans have lost fortunes is unimportant when compared to the possibility of taking out Trump.
