I’m looking forward to warm weather.

Most of my starts bit the dust because every single year I start them too soon.

I need to build some kind of cold frame or mini greenhouse.

I wonder if starting them on top of the freezer in the ice cold garage was bad. They had a light above them but maybe hot feet and freezing cold head at night is bad for them.

Tomatoes looked real good for a while and fizzled out.

Broccoli and cabbage were teeny-smaller than alfalfa sprouts.

I want to throw in the trowel!

Got onion sets and taters in. Mater starts, 3-4 days sowed, are starting to pop up out of the homemade potting soil. Need to get Bell Pepper seeds started. Greens, cabbage and lettuce will be sowed directly in the ground shortly after the rain comes and goes. Supposed to show up tonight and last a couple of days. Since the seeds are so tiny and get sowed so shallow, I raked it over today and will wait for rain to smooth and settle it out some more. Then it’s just a matter of scratching a spot, set the seed and push or sprinkle just a little soil back over it.

Also got my 8 corner brace holes dug deep enough to set the posts in. Just loosely sitting in there but the holes are dug(hard part) and the posts are in the holes. Actual corner posts have been in since last Spring. Ought to be settled in now. Once I get the corner brace posts truly set - corner assemblies assembled, I can string the rest of my wires and have 12 acres fenced in. Yee frickin ha.

Got my seeds started finally between yesterday and today. I have moderate success starting them indoors, have used a cold frame in the past but can’t do that anymore. I have a large heating pad under the trays that I’ll turn on tonight. Did that once many many years ago and had great results.

That is insanity and TOTAL Government Overreach! Mother Government just p*sses me off beyond all reason in some way, every day.

My Inner Libertarian is NOT happy these days. She’s gonna BLOW pretty soon, and it’s NOT going to be pretty. :(

That’s too bad! You should be able to start again, though?

When I lived south of San Diego in the 80’s people gardened 365 days a year! This Wisconsin Yankee was totally amazed that you could actually DO that, LOL!

Have you ever been to Summers Past Farm? OMG! It was my FAVORITE place to visit and 38 years later, it is better than ever! Not sure exactly where you live in CA, but if it’s southern CA it might be worth a trip when all of this flu has burned out.

How gardening adversely affects the virus, I have no clue.

That’s horrifying.

IIRC, you can use freaking EBT/food stamps to buy vegetable seeds!

Seems like there was some discussion somewhere about measures so draconian that people wouldn’t even be allowed to garden.

That’s kind of scary.

:(

I’m up here by San Francisco and it’s been extra cold and foggy.

I’ll start over again.

By the time something sprouts, maybe it will be warm enough and while I’m waiting I can do my yearly slug abatement program...

It’s amazing what some bottom heat can do for germination!

Some questions about garlic.

I did not plant any last fall because of the move. I ordered some for this fall, but now am beginning to wonder if they will come in, the economy being what it is.

I found some older bulbs of the variety I like that are just beginning to sprout, so I want to plant them now.

I understand that they will not develop the cloves like the fall planted ones, but I would like to plant them anyways, just to save them.

My thought was that I would dig them up and then plant them a few months later in the fall as usual.

Does anyone have any experience doing this?

I can’t imagine it would hurt them. When you transplant them, make sure you dig them up deeply so the roots aren’t disturbed.

then, lots of sun, lots of water and lots of mulch!

I can’t imagine garlic supplies being low this fall. They’ll be harvesting the current crop for sale come July and August (needs time to cure before shipping) for fall planting, so that garlic is already in the ground from last season.

That’s true.

I just hope that my early order puts me in a favorable place for getting it, first come, first served and all.

But I had a run in with the company over an order that was submitted hours before they announced a sale. I tried contacting the company immediately for days, which included over the weekend, and by the time I got hold of someone, all I get was that the sale was over, the order has been shipped. IOW, too bad, not going to honor it.

And the problems contacting them were THEIR incompetency. They never returned phone calls even though they promised on their answering machine message that they would.

So I’m looking for another source for my seeds etc.

I don’t have any experience other than planting in the fall. I’d try it and see though.

FWIW - I started the new weekly thread!

I’m a little late, but it’s SPRING and I have a long to-do list, today!

I figured I have nothing to lose.

Even if the garlic produces one giant bulb with no cloves, as is reported for spring garlic, I will just plant it again in the fall and keep on going.

At least I will have saved it.
