NEW YORK — An estimated 80,000 Americans died of flu and its complications last winter — the disease’s highest death toll in at least four decades.
The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Robert Redfield, revealed the total in an interview Tuesday night with The Associated Press.
Flu experts knew it was a very bad season, but at least one found size of the estimate surprising.
“That’s huge,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University vaccine expert. The tally was nearly twice as much as what health officials previously considered a bad year, he said.
In recent years, flu-related deaths have ranged from about 12,000 to — in the worst year — 56,000, according to the CDC.
Last fall and winter, the U.S. went through one of the most severe flu seasons in recent memory. It was driven by a kind of flu that tends to put more people in the hospital and cause more deaths, particularly among young children and the elderly.
The season peaked in early February. It was mostly over by the end of March, although some flu continued to circulate.
Making a bad year worse, the flu vaccine didn’t work very well. Experts nevertheless say vaccination is still worth it, because it makes illnesses less severe and save lives.
“I’d like to see more people get vaccinated,” Redfield told the AP at an event in New York. “We lost 80,000 people last year to the flu.”
CDC officials do not have exact counts of how many people die from flu each year. Flu is so common that not all flu cases are reported, and flu is not always listed on death certificates. So the CDC uses statistical models, which are periodically revised, to make estimates.

“I wondered why we never once hear of a celebrity dying of the flu”
Because they have an underlying condition and the flue just took them over the edge.
I am convinced COVID 19 was part of the last years flu season, we just did not know it.
My wife and I got quite sick at the end of Dec into January. Exact same symptoms as COVID-19. I wound up with bronchitis and my wife with pneumonia. It took about three week to pass. About half of the employees where I work were affected (500 people). Also interesting is we live in Maryland and Maryland so far is fairing well with the number of infected and a very low death rate.
Who cares? Stick to important issues. How many times will Cuomo be on TV today complaining the 2000 UNUSED ventilators in NYC are not enough? I certainly hope theyre throwing any flu patients on a ventilator off to make room for an important Wuhan case.
We're spending a dollar to save a nickel in this mass panic attack driven by the media and politics.
Crash the economy to save people who would have probably died, and do, anyway. What's the rationale in that?
This supposed pandemic is manufactured crises / false flag event. I don’t know what the endgame is supposed to be but it ain’t good for us.
I truly believe this crisis was created by the elites / Deep State go allow them the pathway to enact all their utopian wet dreams since none of ths other fairy tales didn’t work.
Global Terroriam (9/11) didn’t work as planned.
Y2K didn’t work as planned.
Global Warming wasn’t working either so they renamed it Climate Change but that hasn’t worked either, even with everybody in Hollywood on board and a smug little c*nt from Sweden.
But, hey! Let’s create a non-existent pandemic and see if that works.
We are truly sheeple for allowing these MFers to do this to us.
Indeed. Simple metabolic slowdown and this virus would be gone by now. Same with AIdas thriving in high sexual metabolic types
adding to the baby boom increase to the older generation is the increasing effectiveness of modern medicine in keeping people alive. Sadly, this just increases the potential death toll when an especially virulent disease sweeps through.
My apologies for the misspelling but I’m typing on my cell phone.
Yes, that was my point. Those passing from Corona have issues that develop into killers. And that should be made more clear in the reports of mortality.
What could they be doing the Germans?
Yes, I should have said the diagnosis, not the passing.
Is it my memory or do these CDC numbers keep changing?

It is because they lied. No way did 80,000 die of “influenza.” Most were pneumonia deaths. They just lump them together in the stats.
Somebody at AP is going to be out of a job spreading this kind of truth. Democrat propaganda fail. Bad boy...er, girl...er, er, thing????????
I did. The flu didn't kill 30 percent of the healthcare workers in China (to date.) The flu didn't kill 44 healthcare workers in Italy (to date.) The flu didn't cause the US Navy to utilize its two biggest hospital ships to deal with the flu. The flu didn't cause hospital overflows around the country. The flu didn't cause healthcare systems around the world to run out of ventilators, masks, and other critical care supplies. The flu didn't cause many US companies to shift from production of their usual products so they can manufacture ventilators and hospital masks instead. The flu didn't cause makeshift morgues and tent facilities to be set up in hospital parking lots.
Maybe if there had been a "freak out" during the swine flu epidemic during the Obama presidency, 80,000 more people would still alive today.
Think about that...
How do people die from the flu?
How does the flu lead to death?
While it is possible for the flu itself to cause death due to serious breathing problems and severe dehydration, according to Dr. Claire Bocchini, an infectious disease specialist at Texas Children's Hospital, it is more likely that a complication from the infection will be the cause of a flu-related fatality.
The most common complication from the flu that can lead to death is a bacterial infection of the lungs, or bacterial pneumonia.
Interesting points.
We haven’t actually started any manufacturing of additional ventilators through the car companies, they are still fighting over design and money.
We haven’t deployed either ship yet; the one ship is in transit to the west coast, the other ship was in for major repairs, and they just finished short-cutting that and sent it on it’s way.
On the other hand, the corp of engineers is building 4 hospitals in new york, and they are getting ventilators from Elon Musk apparently, who got them from China.
And they have figured out how to run four hoses from one ventilator.
And they still have 2000 ventilators in new york unused; and they think the problem is not enough workers and beds in isolation wards to use them all.
and we don’t know yet whether new york is getting a loan of ventilators from Kansas, or Oklahoma, or some other state where they have few cases.
And it turned out we had a bunch of ventilators that were in surgical centers and not counted.
And there are some in most abortion clinics, but New York has not asked them to stop elective abortions and send their equipment and PPE to New York City, so it can’t be a crisis yet right?
First, basically no one dies from “Covid 19” or the flu. They die from complications related, typically meaning pneumonia. “Flu season” is typically considered to be from October through March, but peak months can have many times as many cases as other months and day to day numbers can vary wildly. Your figure of 22 deaths per day average during flu season is being compared to daily figures for “Covid 19”, and you are incapable of realizing this is an apples to oranges comparison?
Which flu season are you referring to? Last year ,some other year, or an average of all years? In a typical flu season nearly all the pneumonia deaths are attributed to the flu. This year nearly all the pneumonia deaths are being attributed to "Covid 19", whether that is completely accurate remains to be seen. How many people sick with the flu also had "Covid 19"? We are discussing a vulnerable population many of whom have multiple ailments.
Their fasion, leather and textile industries employ a lot of Chinese and hundreds of thousands live there, legal and illegal, many originally from Wuhan.
In fact there are direct flights from Wuhan to northern Italy.
Many Chinese flew home and back for the new year, the pandemic in full swing at ground zero.
Because sensible Italians looked suspiciously at the Chinese and avoided them the liberals cried racism.
Local politicians urged Italians to remove their sensibly worn masks and to hug random Chinese in the streets.
Couple that with a lot of seasoned citizens, good food (obesity), probably high rate of diabetes, high rate of smoking and socialized medicine this is what you get.
Just my worthless opinion so take it for what it's worth.
