Only job I could find after getting out of the Army in ‘70 was the Hamms beer distributor in N.M. No one else wanted anything to do with returning Vets, but this one company did for which I was immensely grateful for.

WHO-TV in Des Moines did a Sunday night sports show titled “Beat the Bear.”

A guy in a Bear costume would bet on games vs. the host and his guests.

I remember the days of the pull tabs but I don’t remember ever putting into the beer can after opening it. Maybe I did, I just don’t remember.

Maybe you don't remember because you'd had six or more Hamms at the time?

We used to play a game where we had point values based on the brand of can you found. The more rare, the more points. You scored a bonus point if your can had a pull tab inside.

Today, they would be sued out of existence the first time someone swallowed one.

Yeah, it's a different world now. Nobody got sued when people swallowed those things back then. A guy my sister went to college with did it. Back then you just went to the doctor and they extracted the tab and you learned your lesson.

My memory of 1970s beer was Schaefer beer.

My memory of 1970s beer was Schaefer beer. They were the official beer of the NY Mets.

I'm old enough to remember when my friends and I would go to Shea, and get general admission seats (last 8 rows of the upper deck) for $4. Ushers would wipe your seat before you sat down, and when the beer guy came to your seat, he'd open a 16 oz. Schaefer and pour it into a cup for you. And at almost every game, there was at least one fight somewhere nearby, with the combatants literally tumbling down the steps still trying to punch each other.

Good times.

Grew up in the East back in the '60s and always heard about western beers like Hamms, Coors, Olympia, et al.
When I eventually got out west, I wondered what all the hoopla was about. They tasted like carbonated water.

It would take a truly stupid person to swallow one, even if it managed to get back out of the can.

Yeah...it used to stick to the bottom. You'd literally have to slap the can to get it to move.

“I did it for years with soda cans. It would take a truly stupid person to swallow one, even if it managed to get back out of the can.”

When I was a kid my cousins and I, having nothing better to do on a lazy summer day, got involved in a ferocious debate whether someone could swallow the pull tab if you put it inside the can. My cousin succeeded in getting the tab to fall out after about 30 minutes of shaking the thing all around. That was with an empty can.

He concluded it was dangerous because he got it to come out.

I concluded it was safe, because it took him forever to do it.

Heh, heh. Good one. Yeah, I was pretty much a lightweight back then. Nowadays a six-pack barely gets me a good buzz.

Hamms was popular back in the day but only the old guys drank it. As I recall.

People tend to get pretty stupid after their sixth beer.

Wasn't it Hamms that they were drinking in The Deer Hunter?

Thanks for that memory. Last time I had one was with a shot of Jack. Me and my buddy Gary Schenck were sitting at the bar in a Wyandotte Mich pub. Long, long time ago..about 50 years.. Those years go by quickly. Enjoy every one, youngsters.

In college we called it “Haams”. A jutting chin aided pronunciation.

Rolling Rock definitely would make sense for the location. I just thought I remembered Hamms for some reason.
