we spent 5 years dithering around, paralyzed by accusations of disciminating against gays, before science forged ahead and developed AZT. Another 7 years, with bare-bones funding, to develop effective antivirals. Had we mandatory quarantined the first cases, same as we do for tuberculosis patients now and then, and focused 100% on a treatment/cure, we wouldn’t have had to have worry about telling ijits to put on a condom 20 years later. Where would we be, scientifically, in understanding viruses, had we studied HIV intensely in that first half of the 80’s just as it was becoming epidemic? But no...it would have been discrimination. And virtue-signaling even then was more important than disease eradication.
And airports and bridges. We are seeing NY license plates here in WV, not on the interstate, but in “summer” home areas. Locals are not happy.
In my humble opinion, those folks are making a bad mistake. They are leaving areas with excellent health care to go to some personal Shangri-La. It’s denial and fantasy time.
Same with the Manhattanites who fled to the Hamptons. They soon realized there was only one small hospital there, and started trying to figure out how to buy their own ventilators and set up isolation rooms. Still thinking their money can buy them out of everything.
I said something similar earlier, that I wished I had gone to the beach, but on second though, no.
Americans abandon their parents. Haven housed and cared for a whole bunch of them, I can assure you that the plurality of American Elder care is “[Sibling name] has got it. He is doing a good job.” Or, the nursing home/assisted living place will take care of it.
American adult children spend more time and effort establishing Trusts so they can get the money than they do visiting their old, demented, and sick parents.
We treat our elders—as a cohort, very poorly.

Your claim that there are a horde of undiscovered cases is illogical. Asymptomatics can still be contagious and would be starting fires everywhere because 4 out of 5 would not be diagnosed before infecting many people, if they ever were. But that is not what’s happening. We see great outbreaks in large cities and isolated cases in most of the rest of the country. Now that the rats are fleeing NYC like they did Wuhan, expect to see a ton of cases all along the Eastern Seaboard. Thanks, FluBro in chief de Blasio!
And I have it from a long-time friend (55 years+) who is a doctor (45 years+) and is involved in the mitigation and containment effort that the proportions of asymptomatic/mild/serious/critical cases have been pretty solidly determined to be as previously described. You are simply wrong on the facts and letting your confirmation bias lead you astray.
We have a very thorough epidemiological case study called South Korea which thoroughly supports this distribution and the conclusions.
