Coronavirus in N.Y.: ‘Deluge’ of Cases Begins Hitting Hospitals
NY Times ^ | 03-20-2020 | Staff

New York State’s long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.

In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.

In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.

Some of the jump in New York’s cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.

State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.

As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

That is NOT the type of exponential growth most everyone has been predicting.

“Exponential” has been breezily used to gaslight us. It has always meant any increase in cases/deaths. Not even Italy has had real exponential growth in weeks.

Actually the number of asymptomatic and mild cases not touching the medical system are 85% - 90%.

>>Again, not relevant. These cases are hitting they hospital or they aren’t

number of hospitalizations out of 8,000 positive cases is not reported in this excerpt.

FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn said that while chloroquine has been approved for other indications, it would still need to go through clinical trials.

IF the reporting was accurate then Mr. Hahn is woefully misinformed about US law. Both medications that have been shown to be effective in limited tests are currently FDA approved drugs. No MD or DO in the USA needs FDA permission to prescribe hydroxychloroquine and/or azithromycin to a patient.

Fake news or fake information from the FDA.

Deep in the article the person was in the nineties

Yes. Always something like that. The media made a huge deal over Italy last week, leaving it to the third or fourth paragraph down to mention many of the fatalities were people in their 80s who had smoked like a chimney for 70 years.

WHEN will people finally realize after more than a century -- hell, two centuries -- that the media is a profit-making enterprise? They are NOT dedicated to your well-being. Like EVERY OTHER BUSINESS EVERYWHERE they are trying to make money. And during a crisis like this there is a LOT of money to be made in hits, ratings, and papers sold. FEAR is what sells, not "concern." Remember the quote attributed to William Randolph Hearst when his reporter cabled that all was quiet in Cuba when he reached its shores? "You provide the prose poems, I'll provide the war." This attitude on the part of media barons has NEVER changed. Chaos makes them money.

You are startlingly quiet with the answer to your question regarding do I have clinical experience with CoVID-19 patients. I guess it is convenient to just gloss by this. LOL.

Anectdotal I know, but I have a sister in law who is a nurse in Alabama who reports that her hospital is using hydrochloroquine and z packs and they are having great success with their patients as well.

Poster credibility really means nothing.

Either it is working or it isn’t. My sense is that it is, but we will all know for sure over the next week or so.

>>You show up at a hospital because you have symptoms.

I can’t speak or NYC but some locations in America have big restrictions on who can even take the test.

Our local rural hospital and urgent care is short of equipment also. There have been several patients they were concerned may have had it but so far not. The staff are very jittery.

One way or the other, the end is near.

I live ‘in the woods’ and have much wild life continually on the property.

I noticed the other day that the deer that normally ‘greet’ me when going out the driveway had been absent and for the helluva it I will say for maybe 3 weeks.

Deer, turkeys, birds etc were strangely missing.

TODAY, deer showed up at around 1600 and saw some turkeys later.

Who knows, maybe they were in hiding until the ‘trouble’ blew over.

Then again, maybe every year they just ‘disappear’ for the last couple weeks of winter?????

Italy is closed for all nonessential travel. Do you know that tobacco shops are still open and going to them is considered acceptable? That is probably the most glaring answer to the question Why Italy? I will make the FEARPERS a deal, instead of violating liberties of every American, lets work to MAKE ILLEGAL tobacco. This will give everyone something to do, and improve the general health. What the hell, Danny TN believes he is the executive authority of liberties, lets get him working on something constructive,

the sister in the hospital said its crazy the number of people besieging the hospital because they “think” they have the wuhan virus...

Precisely. The overload is likely in large part due to media-driven hysteria leading to everyone and their dog thinking that a mild cough and sneezing (at the beginning of allergy season in a good portion of the country, no less) means that they are dying from SARS-CoV-2.

I've asked this before, and I'll keep asking it until I find a reliable published answer....

Exactly what criteria are being used to determine the cause of death in patients who have died and who have also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2?

Clinical and radiographic evidence of pneumonia in the absence of bacterial growth from sputum/blood cultures, together with atypical radiographic +/- lab results? Non-specific ground glass opacities on CT imaging? ARDS without any other apparent inciting cause? Are we testing viral loads and correlating this with severity of illness in patient subgroups?

Or, have we been taking Italy's approach, where reportedly they've simply been calling any death with positive test results a "COVID-19 death"? If they instead had done stool sample cultures of all those patients, would we be hearing about the pandemic of E. coli-related deaths in Italy?

Do we have any idea how Iran, China, et al determined SARS-CoV-2 to be the cause of death in their patients? Look at Germany's case fatality numbers...they're minuscule. Have they been using rigid cause-of-death criteria when the rest of the world hasn't?

The data show that this strain causes mild to no symptoms in the majority of patients. And, at last check, we haven't done large random population sampling in the U.S. yet. So, we don't know how ubiquitous this strain is. Many deaths will test positive for the virus. Positive testing results are by no means prima facie evidence that the virus directly or indirectly killed a patient.

One would think that we are actually making efforts to prove causation, not just correlation. But, since the stench of politicization has been steaming off the issue from the onset, and since the media has taken the reins and has frenzied this horse into a full gallop, all bets may well be off.

So much information / numbers being left out of stories like this. Getting a better understanding of the big picture is difficult. We are getting numbers thrown at us like buckshot by writers who don’t understand statistical analysis in the least.

Well, now that my business has dropped by 100% I guess it will be easy enough, though very boring, to sit home and watch my financial future going down the crapper.

The city and county will still demand my property taxes to pay teachers and others who are not working, and take my home if I can’t pay them. Am I the only one disturbed by that? People who work for the government will now get paid by those of us who have no money coming in.

And yet the death rate is an amazing 0.5%, and going down each day.

I started a spreadsheet on 3/13/2020 and the percentage of those infected who died has gone DOWN every day since. However, I make the death rate to be 1.3% of those infected as of the time of this writing.
