Costco Crackdown: Stores Across Southland Place Limit On Essential Items To Curb Coronavirus Panic Buying
KCBS Los Angeles ^ | March 19, 2020 | Staff

CHINO HILLS (CBSLA) — A sign outside a Chino Hills Costco alerts shoppers that they are out of 13 essential hygiene and food items.

For the past week, it has been hard to find items like water and toilet paper at any store across Southern California. That’s why the company is cracking down on panic buying amid the coronavirus pandemic.

While shopping carts are still stacked high at Costco stores across the Southland, customers say buying in bulk during the COVID-19 outbreak is starting to run a bit smoother.

“This was my second time coming within the last few hours,” said customer Sheryl Caline, adding that she came back to stock up for her family. “I had to call my sister, see what she needed.”

In Montclair, they’re using pallets, traffic cones, and construction netting to line people up outside and control the crowds inside the store.

Costco stores are also limiting the amount of essential items customers can purchase and prohibiting the return of recently hoarded items, including toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizing wipes, water, rice, and Lysol.

“They shouldn’t take returns!” Caline said. “[Those customers] overbought.”

Robert and Tina Kinder, two more Costco customers, said they feel like stricter rules earlier on would have significantly eased the transition into this pandemic.

“It kinda puts them in their place,” Tina said of the new rules. “Like, you can’t be doing that! Taking advantage of people during a national crisis.”

They say that all will work out if we look out for one another and respect the new rules, like the stay-at-home orders issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom Thursday, during this uncertain time.

“I think it’s just important to do family time right now. stay home,” Robert said.

On Tuesday, I went to two Costco locations in Los Angeles County...No eggs.

On Wednesday, I went to a different Costco location in LA County. I finally bought eggs.

No return on certain items...Probably a good idea...

At one Costco, I saw one lady yelling at another lady not to get too close to her. She mentioned 6 feet... I think a fight could break out between two customers because of this social distancing protocol...

well when you are now have a country full of selfish pigs who don’t believe in God so this is their only life and who think they amd theirs are the most important people on the planet and just don’t know how not to indulge in every single need or desire they have, this is what happens.

My mom is from the world war II generation and thinks it’s all disgusting and silly and sad.

she says they all were poor back then so they knew how to do without.

She called these generations spoiled brats

She might be onto something

6 days ago I put up this vanity.

“”Would you support a Trump request for Walmart, Costco etc, to implement purchase limits?””

Lots of hits, but it was surprising how many thought it was a bad idea...Apparently those folks like empty shelves.

I was glad to see our Costco put limits all around the store on select items. Because of it, I could buy milk and eggs. I went to another grocer and they had wiped out all of the eggs. Insane.

What people really fail to understand is that there’s plenty of supply. It just take a couple of days to get to you.

And with a snow storm closing I-70 and I-80, it will take a little bit longer for supplies to reach So. Cal.

I think it is people no longer buying breakfast at restaurants all of sudden buying eggs at grocers/big box retailers that didn’t before.

I suspect the eggs may be hoarded for Easter’s Easter egg hunts, which is 3 weeks away. Eggs can safely be stored in the refrigerator for 5 weeks. So, eggs to have on hand for breakfasts and eggs for the hunt. Maybe some for egg foo young, fried rice and egg drop soup. They can add up and if you have an extra refrigerator, you can stock up.

I think I want to boil a few eggs. That’s the ticket!

Agreed! The ‘selfish brats’ are serial hoarders. Like an Egyptian plague of locusts they fall upon meat counters, paper products, canned goods, dairy, and cleaning products, devour it all in moments, and leave nothing behind for the rest of us.

Great analogy.

I can’t fathom thinking NOTHING of what others will need after me.

i would buy more than usual. But I would NOT empty the shelves. Who am I to do that?

What does one say on judgement day?

“I needed ALL of it!! To hell with your other creatures!!”

I got enough troubles when i die and face the courts. Don’t need that one added.

Saw a lady in WM earlier in the week with about 20 dozen eggs in her cart.
Not kidding.

The left and right often make the same mistake: They treat the emergency as if it were the same as the normal case. The left wants to apply the emergency rules to all cases and the right wants to to apply the normal rules to the emergencies.

I’d support a reasonable limit on purchases of certain essential items as well. It is not a legitimate hindrance to anyone who is not trying to hoard which by effective definition is being selfish.

It is insane what is going on. We finally scored our Vital Farms eggs yesterday. I just had a few left and these are the absolute best eggs anywhere.

Expensive tho.

On Tues or Wed, I heard Costco was limiting TP to 2 packages - WHO needs 2 of THAT SIZE at home? They should’ve limited to 1.

“there’s plenty of supply. It just take a couple of days to get to you.”

I wonder how long it will take to catch up with demand.

Toilet paper and hand sanitizer are still being delivered, but people snatch them up immediately - often all they can carry.

I suppose that without purchase limits on such items, the availability is going to be a problem for longer. The more people see empty shelves, the more they will hoard when they do see some.

Purchase limits might help calm the panic buying/hoarding impulse, by allowing people to see the product available on the shelves, and ending the shortage situation sooner.

“I think it is people no longer buying breakfast at restaurants all of sudden buying eggs”

I have also noted my residential Internet service bogging down in mid-afternoon - likely from all the new demand from folks at home tele-working.

I wonder what other shifts in demand or utilization will occur because of the new patterns?

Definitely, traffic is much lighter. Is fuel demand going to slump?

I guess that across the board, a lot of what people used to eat in restaurants, they will be looking to buy to make it at home.
