WHO Now Officially Recommends to Avoid Taking Ibuprofen For COVID-19 Symptoms

The World Health Organization recommended Tuesday that people suffering COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.

The warning by French Health Minister Veran followed a recent study in The Lancet medical journal that hypothesised that an enzyme boosted by anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen could facilitate and worsen COVID-19 infections.

Asked about the study, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva the UN health agency's experts were "looking into this to give further guidance."

"In the meantime, we recommend using rather paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication. That's important," he said.

This is and has been standard recommendation to take Tylenol and hospitals always use it unless there is reason to use ibuprofrin or other cox inhibitor.

Maybe some Paracetemol (U.K.’s acetaminophen brand) or Tylenol person has sway with the World Health Org (WHO) ?

When I was at an ER for fever in college , I remember being given both Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen.
Obviously this corona thing is it’s own unique ballgame!

I take ibuprofen when I need to sleep.

I have a lot of old injuries which have accumulated over the decades, and they get worse over time. I don’t notice that they even hurt normally.

Take an anti inflammatory muscle relaxant and I am generally out like a light.

As a healthcare professional who works in Infectious Diseases, I found your article interesting. However, I have just scoured every inch of the World Health Organization website and found no such statement or recommendation. That’s not to say it’s not accurate, just that if the WHO is the source, someone might want to let them know.

I never trusted those fake aspirins anyway; I use the real thing. But I’m fortunate enough to have a cast-iron stomach; aspirin’s never bothered me.

Covid-19 binds to ACE2.

ACE2 is increased by ibuprofen and some blood pressure meds.

Lancet has something similar regarding ibuprofen and ACE2

Are patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus at increased risk for COVID-19 infection?

I don’t know about aspirin. And judging from what I saw today there may not be any problem with Ibuprofen anyway, or any of the other drugs that increase ACE2.

The ACE2 issue isn’t clear at all, it turns out that the medical evidence is contradictory.

This MedCram video is devoted to the ACE2 role in Covid-19. It’s aimed at doctors but if you stick with it it’s pretty interesting.

Thanks! My local pharmacist said it was a “BS” study but I want to precautious.

Tylenol hasn’t always agreed with me in recent years. But I still have it on hand just in case. :)
