Coronavirus: Dutch adopt controversial ‘herd immunity’ strategy

The Netherlands will aim to develop immunity to coronavirus among its population by allowing large numbers to contract the illness at a controlled pace, prime minister Mark Rutte announced in a national address on Monday.

“The reality is that in the near future a large part of the Dutch population will be infected with the virus,” Mr Rutte said. “We can slow down the spread of the virus while building controlled group immunity.”

“It can take months or even longer to build group immunity, and during that time we need to shield people at greater risk as much as possible.”

The idea of developing group immunity to coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, is controversial. It has been supported by Sweden’s state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell and Britain’s chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance. But the World Health Organisation (WHO) has questioned its basis in evidence.

And it is probably the correct approach. Shutting everything down and destroying the economy isn’t going to stop this overhyped super flu. People need to stop being pu****s and accept that, as George Carlin would say.

The UK considered this approach but as cases piled up they reversed course. But as the Dutch believe in euthanasia anyway, it may be more acceptable for them.

A good approach. Isolate the old, those with pulmonary issues, and idiots who vape or smoke. Everyone else will not face any worse odds than with the flu. Reports of “permanent lung damage even among the young” seem to be uncorroborated.

Their approach seems logical...control the movements and actions of the elderly (I.e the ones that are going to stress the system) and let those under 65-ish continue on with business of the country.

Numbers of sick overwhelm the healthcare system when using this control method. What the US government is doing is seeking to control the spread so that the healthcare system can handle the extreme cases. New treatments will be developed and in time a vaccine will be rolled out. Like the President said we are fighting a war. Tactics will vary.

What about the reports of permanent testicles damage? This bug may sterilize a large portion of the population.

The Brits reversed course because the NHS sucks.

You left out a bit...

While this link is yet to be proven, researchers from Wuhan’s Tongji Hospital...

Kinda important to my mind.

Theory is what “could” means, and that theory has not been proven.

When you’re building a defense against a sudden immediate threat, you defend the ‘backline’ first. If the White House gets an intruder alert, what’s the first thing they do? Secure the president & his family. Then lock all the entrances and begin patrolling the corridors. The LAST thing they do is send uniformed SS out to patrol the grounds.

It seems that the ‘backline’ in this virus situation is the elderly who are most at-risk. 16.4% fatality rate for those over 70 contracting this virus. So the grandparents need to be isolated from the grandkids. That’s relatively easy to do. The virus then burns out running around the general population, minus the isolation group.

The problem, as China showed, is that the healthcare system crashes & burns.

Apparently, the people who present with this disease seem to impress the hell out of people seeing it for the first time. Yesterday I was reminded of an afternoon decades ago when I saw a dozen people with malaria. Malaria impressed the hell out of me. Last night I watched a guy on Tucker talk about extracting Antibody from recovering and use it to protect the mildly ill from needing a ventilator. I told the wife, “This means the folks seeing this in the ER are sacred to death.” The cost of such a program is “Mars Colonization” tier. If they are seriously considering spending this much money someone is scared as hell.

I’d love to hear what Trump has heard in classified briefings from Fort Detrick types. That’s probably partially driving our response.

Look at the numbers, listen to what they are saying. I have been saying for days “How many blue people per hour can you local hospital handle?” For most hospitals one is about the limit.

It took decades to realize 1918 flu caused a lot of Parkinson’s in the 60s.

It’s kinda like having to deal with North Korea. We know they have a nuke or 20. Can they deliver them? Probably not, but maybe. So your entire strategy for dealing with them is based upon a ‘maybe’ because the downside is do huge even if the Las Vegas Odds are massively in your favor overall.
