A coronavirus cautionary tale from Italy: Don’t do what we did

Many of us were too selfish to follow suggestions to change our behavior. Now we’re in lockdown and people are needlessly dying.

Do the two of you actually believe that this is a manufactured event, and that nothing extraordinary is occurring, and that Trump is playing along in order to appease voters?

Of course not. They are saying the Media is not letting a crisis go to waste and are piling it on.

My wife and I were remembering something we had at the end of November...chills a low grade fever and a feeling that we weren’t “right” (a vague sense of something wrong, like we were sick in some way). Hers lasted about three days, mine was really about one day, maybe two. We were wondering about this...both of us have no underlying conditions and are just over 60. This sounds very much like a lot of what we are hearing now about those who have a very mild case of this. Because we live in Las Vegas, we are exposed to everything in the world here very quickly.

Certainly can’t say, but we are wondering if perhaps it was here much earlier than this big outbreak in China and elsewhere.

They are definitely correct about that.

Honestly, I would expect nothing greater from the Media. Thing is, the Left is going get hit by this just like everyone else.

They are going to try and capitalize, it’s their nature, but they are also just as mortal as everyone else.

Cities are starting to lockdown. Schools are closed, and retirement homes are quarantined.

This isn't a joke. People who are treating this too lightly are exacerbating the problem.

You’re seriously basing the legitimacy of this on the reactions of politicians who don’t wipe their nose without consulting a poll?

The risks are such that it’s better to be overly cautious. Perhaps President Trump figures dealing with a crisis like this has a secondary benefit of building our nation’s resilience and emergency preparedness.

My father’s generation fought a World War and lived through the Depression. America needs to toughen up and so there’s virtue in sacrificing for future health and safety.

Meanwhile, this is a wake up call to the risks of much more serious viruses of the computer systems variety.

What if the East Coast ran out of Power or internet for two weeks? Much of industry would be ground to a halt. Do we have backup systems for that infrastructure.

Today we’re complaining about water bottles not in fresh supply while 2 big aisles of soda pop and tea bottles are well-stocked. Crisis?

Japan is ravaged by typhoons, floods, earthquakes, mud slides on a regular basis — and sometimes great tsunamis. Yet the Japanese are better organized and psychologically prepared to handle such disasters. We need to be studying their best practices and bringing those back to America.

Italy got dusted with (American-supplied) DDT, dried its swamps (er, wetlands), and killed trillions of mosquitoes.

No plague, no malaria, no cholera, and no yellow fever. And darn few bedbugs.

I’m visiting my sis in Hilo. I was here in early November too. Back then a strange cold/flu raged here. I got it and was sick twice for 3 weeks. My whole family got it, community did. I too wonder if that was Corona. A friend of mine even knew someone that died from it.

Stand or Fall - The Fixx

Crying parents tell their children
If you survive don’t do as we did
A son exclaims there’ll be nothing to do to
Her daughter says she’ll be dead with you
While foreign affairs are screwing rotten,
Line morale has hit rock bottom
Dying embers stand forgotten
Talks of peace were being trodden

Stand or fall, state your peace tonight
Stand or fall, state your peace tonight

Is this the value of our existence
Should we proclaim with such persistence
Our destiny relies on conscience
Red or blue, what’s the difference
Stand or fall, state your peace tonight
Stand or fall, state your peace tonight

It’s the Euro theatre
It’s the Euro theatre
It’s the Euro theatre

Panic and chaos = the left uses these to take our remaining liberties in any way they can. No panic here! Suffered through years of ex-POTUS BO’s term (as did all American patriots) POTUS DJT continues to do all in his power to keep US safe from what he knows to be true. He was tested after being face to face with known carriers. He showed no signs of being infected. What does that fact tell you?

That sounds more pronounced than what my wife and I experienced, but you hear of mild cases as well. It just got us thinking because, truly, it doesn’t make sense that something like this would come that suddenly, there’d be naturally a much longer buildup to an outbreak. And during that buildup, no one would really suspect anything, and travel would be as ubiquitous as it was until just recently. Normally we get something in Vegas within days of it being just about anywhere in the developed world.

Don’t know...but I do wonder if some stuff from late fall, early winter might have been this before we knew what to call it.

> 1. They didn’t shut down travel with China.
> 2. They kept workplaces open, so kids went to live with the grandparents
> 3. People just ignored it and went to pagan-era spring Bacchanalias that have been re-dressed up as Nazarene Lent activities.

Any more info on item 3 please? :-P

I got a first-hand update from a medical professional within the last 48 hours. Three things I came away with from that conversation:

1. This person hasn't implemented any special measures for his own family members that he hasn't been doing already for years.

I spoke to a medical professional in the last few hours who was exposed and is self-isolating, especially since her husband is in the high risk group.

(in answer to my earlier question)

the day before Ash Wednesday (in 2020, Feb. 27) is in Italy called “Martedi Grassi” (”Fat Tuesday”) (in 2020, Feb. 26). Another term often used is “Carnevale” which is roughly latin for “without meat.” Apparently many cities in Italy celebrate this day (prominently including Venice).

New Orleans’ Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” in french.

The Arno valley was heavy with the little bloodsuckers going back a long way. If da Vinci ("that means 'from Vinci'." -- Kramer) had managed to get his canal built, it might have made a big difference even from that standpoint. Bummer. :^)
