Dr. Helen Y. Chu, an infectious disease expert in Seattle, knew that the United States did not have much time.
In late January, the first confirmed American case of the coronavirus had landed in her area. Critical questions needed answers: Had the man infected anyone else? Was the deadly virus already lurking in other communities and spreading?
As luck would have it, Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region.
To repurpose the tests for monitoring the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But nearly everywhere Dr. Chu turned, officials repeatedly rejected the idea, interviews and emails show, even as weeks crawled by and outbreaks emerged in countries outside of China, where the infection began.

its weird innit?
“Older folks are at higher risk with most diseases. Unfortunately thats just the way it works”
Yes...I’m getting there myself (69) and trying my best to stay healthy...

Either way, it’s been fun.
A simple rule: You only test those with symptoms.
With a POS test kit that creates 30% - 50% false negatives. Now we are Italy 2 weeks ago, and need to do a lockdown to stop this thing.
You are arguing against the mathematical rules established eons ago?
Hehe, foolish you.
What mathematical rules am I arguing against?
Thank you for posting this first hand account. Unfortunately there are a couple here who will ignore it or even minimize Italy’s current situation.
That’s also assuming that in an untested population they correctly attributed all deaths. It also is not taking into account the time of the progression to death is slow while there is exponential growth in the number of new cases.
The idiocy on FR is getting pretty high this morning.
Trumps fault
Got this other NYT piece from a Trump basher:

Singapore is about 200 miles from the equator, and Oz is in its summer, and they have it. Why are we going to be different?
When the numerator increases and the denominator stays essentially the same the percentage goes down.
We are in the early stages of a plunge in death rate percentages.
It’s going to go well under 1%
They have it because people traveled to Italy. The disease is not burning through the populations you specify.
There was a Corona patient in the next room, and the door to the room was not always closed when I walked by. Regardless ... I was sicker than a dog for 3 days, and they kicked me out of the hospital because they did not want me to get anyone sick, but would not test me.
But thw data is bad with all sorts of unaccounted for variables. That is why the proposed function is not operative.
The idiocy here is growing exponentially.
and he/she hits every c-virus thread with it
Im sorry you were ill. You did not meet test criteria with limited. i here if tests available. The good news is you appear to have recovered.
The outbreak is probably beginning earlier than it needed to, because many were panicking and hysterical about what could have been more temporary fluctuations in markets. Too bad, with only about a month before warmer weather.
That average age you are posting to all these threads is not supported by your supposed evidence thereof.
Stop posting blatant disinformation!
Such BS. Nobody suggested every citizen in the US should have been tested at all, let alone in a week. But just look at the Biogen experience, they had exposure first to those coming down to symptoms and then those who had been diagnosed—and were refused tests.
The Dems and the media couldnt have cared less when the China outbreak was going on. They were all impeachment, all the time for weeks on end.
