Dr. Helen Y. Chu, an infectious disease expert in Seattle, knew that the United States did not have much time.
In late January, the first confirmed American case of the coronavirus had landed in her area. Critical questions needed answers: Had the man infected anyone else? Was the deadly virus already lurking in other communities and spreading?
As luck would have it, Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region.
To repurpose the tests for monitoring the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But nearly everywhere Dr. Chu turned, officials repeatedly rejected the idea, interviews and emails show, even as weeks crawled by and outbreaks emerged in countries outside of China, where the infection began.

The concern is the among the few that actually get sick, the mortality rate is very high. Among the total population, the number is low. Take the latter route if it comforts you more but don’t be surprised when older folks start dying in numbers like Washington. Sure, explain that in the big picture it is nothing.

It’s looking scary. Pandemic in Detroit? Too close to home.
We are six weeks into this, not four months. Italy is 10 weeks into this and they are in crisis. Look on worldometer and see cases vs recoveries. Recovery takes weeks of intensive care. And Korea spiked from 35 new cases yesterday to 250 today. This is not a seasonal flu. This is bad.
Hence the word, “if”. :)
Fact is, if a lot of folks are getting it and getting over it, and they are never added to the number of cases, it means our mortality rate percentage is off. And maybe way off.
1/2 their lung scarred? Where do you get that? key cases are mild or asymptomatic and have no permanent damage. Most people that end up on a vent with ARDS will recover fully if they survive. The fear mongering and ignorance around here is deep.
Not if you want to know the prevalence of something in a community.
Still racing around screaming hysteric chicken little hysteria, I see.
Real facts for those interested in Science and data not politically motivated panic mongering and lying.

Civil service rules make it very difficult to fire civil service employees.
Even after 10 deaths in WA, they still had not tested everyone in Life Center Kirkland. I was in the hospital every day visiting my mother before she died, and every day that I was there over 2 weeks, Critical Care had Wuhan Flu patients. When I started to feel sick, I called the State Dept of Health, and I could not get tested. Even symptoms and exposure could not get me a test.

It is literally what doctors are saying. Don’t get tested unless you are showing symptoms. It’s one reason Trump is not being tested, and that IS the correct response.
This isn’t the plague. This isn’t a movie. This is basically the flu. And like the flu, if you are old and infirm, it may be fatal. For the rest of the population, if you show symptoms, get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids.
Meanwhile, the flu:

People really need to get a grip here - and stay out of nursing homes in Kirkland. :)
That’s fine but our country is ultimately bigger in every way. It may have helped but so many people were flooding into our country before the virus was known to be widespread.
I did updates on the 2014 ebola outbreak on the thread linked below. Reality turned out to be way different than projections. The updates are the last posts on the thread. Reality was far different than projections and hysteria.

In other words the projected US deaths from ebola were off by a factor of 14,000.
Will be interesting to see how coronavirus turns out.
The spread has nothing to do with lack of testing and everything to do with rapid transportation. When a disease has a 5 day incubation period and you can from anywhere to anywhere in the country in 4 to 6 hours, testing won’t contain it.
Will they make us dip our fingers in purple ink so they know we’ve been tested? How about the INVADERS who vote.
Lying false claim. Outbreak was 1st idenfitied in Dec 2019
