Manager who locked Trump supporters out of Bojangles’ restaurant after president’s rally is fired

The manager of a Bojangles’ restaurant in Charlotte, North Carolina who locked out Trump supporters after leaving a rally for the president has now found himself out of the job.

Donald Trump had given a speech to over 10,000 of his supporters at a venue that is less than a ten-minute walk from the restaurant, according to The Charlotte Observer. Michael Furick, who attended the rally, took to Facebook afterwards to recount how he and other Trump supporters were barred from entering the Bojangles’ restaurant.

“Bojangles locked the doors to the Trump rally last night and denied service,” Furick wrote. “Ironic because the rally was at Bojangles arena. @bojangles this is pretty distasteful. I walk up to the door and people are gathered around and stated they would not serve Trump supporters.”

Photos that Furick posted show an employee making a “stop” gesture with his hand, and Trump supporters standing outside with their pro-Trump signs. Eventually, the shift manager who had made the call to lock the doors called his own manager, who came to the restaurant to unlock the establishment.

As Trump supporters everywhere threatened to boycott Bojangles, the chain responded on Facebook by saying that the manager “made a bad decision to close the dining room. We apologize. That manager is no longer employed by Bojangles’.”

Fine, good. But companies always make it sound like “Bad Employee”. Someone hired this person to manage one of their stores. Training, investment, etc in the person based on the assumption they had some level of common sense. Then the person pulls a stunt like this and throws shade on the whole corporation.

Employees should be fired for sure, including the one that hired this idiot.

After the restaurant doors were opened, could the food be trusted?

Not sure I’d be comfortable eating there.

If you’ve never been to a Bojangles, the help is generally....ethnic...and never happy to serve whitey. unless it’s the breakfast crew (who are there at the crack of dawn with fewer ethnic employees. Just my experience. YMMV.

If the company is doing its job when training “management”, this scenario was covered well & the shift “manager” knew this would backfire.

I’m guessing the company is more concerned with training management to be sensitive to the alphabet soup grievance groups and didn’t give damn about this kind of behavior towards normal people.

Easier to just apologize to conservatives - they know we won’t burn the building down like the kook lefties.

Side note, it’s been nearly 50 years since I worked in food service, but I’m guessing a “shift manager” makes a pittance more an hour more than the grunts. I was the night manager at Rollins College (Winter Park, FL) student cafeteria in the early 70s and made 15¢ more an hour than the people I supervised. I was of course a heck of a lot more responsible than some of these twerps.

But, as far as I know, it is the only place your can still get a cup of Patio soda, a brand that Wikipedia claims was phased out in the '70s.

When I worked in fast food back in the late 70s, a "shift manager" was basically a 19 year old kid. Their main job was to make sure the rest of the line workers were doing their job and they'd be trotted out whenever a disgruntled customer asked to "speak to the manager" in order to deal with the situation (so the real manager didn't have to).

The real manager stayed in the back office and rarely came out.

The restaurant's name sounds "ethnic."

Bojangles of Harlem--Fred Astaire (1936)

Ask anyone up Harlem way who that man Bojangles is.
They may not know who's president,
But just ask them who Bojangles is...

Training

You would think that all corporations would train all employees that they leave politics out of the office and that the political views of their customers is none of their business.

Take a controversial political stand and you are going to tick off half of your customers, at least.

I've never been to a Bojangles but every time I hear that name, I'm reminded of that Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song from the early 1970s.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Mr Bojangles

Dylan did a cover of it too.

I wasn’t impressed with the one in Shepardsville the two times we stopped there on a ride. The (as you put it so delicately) ethic help was quite pleasant, the food only so so. One annoying thing was the overly loud “music” everywhere you sat. It was also blaring in the bathroom. I was just glad to eat & get out of there.

Do these companies even research that sort of thing anymore? Lotta MBAs that don’t know sh*t about real people and the real world.

Popeyes is definitely better IMO. I like the chicken sandwhich - but I won’t fight over it LOL

You never hear stuff like this happening at Chick-fil-A’s locking out leftist drecks from their eateries. All are welcomed- just behave.

Just how will this follow the now ex-manager around in future hiring possibilities?

I also like the original recording by the song's writer, Jerry Jeff Walker, and also the version by David Bromberg.
