Yup—get burned by half measures—every time.
That did that many in Korea yesterday. Yesterday afternoon.
The numbers are going to skyrocket next week—just because we can test. There are not many more cases (relatively) than there were yesterday. We will simnply know about them.
Once we get to 5,000 cases (within the next week) the media is going to freak out, They will turn on the CDC and the pols. You will see hospital CEOs freaking out.
You will see snowflakes on Social Media screaming because there is no vaccine yet.
You will see snowflakes and idiots pointing the Lysol bottles and claiming “they knew this was coming.....”
Everyone with any sense of viruses knew this was coming years ago with the publication of “Hot Spot.” If this is surprising anyone, they were not paying attention.
So, its coming. It is going to be disruptive. People are sheep. They will be herded off a cliff of “outrage.”
Free Republic isn’t doing this. No daily live thread is doing this. Its human nature when you get a bunch of fools paying more attention to Meagan and Harry than what is going on with the human condition.
Just by having this discussion, people (believers or deniers) are engaging in more intelligent conversation than 99% of the people in the country.
But, I think we can remove our “shocked” faces, and start addressing the realities of what is likely to be coming.

Listening to Gov. Cuomo now- new cases etc. He’s showing calm and rational leadership. He’s being open and respectful- he’s pissed that some on at-home quarantine are breaking it.

We have a million hospital beds in the U.S. but only about 60-65,000 ventilators. These are NECESSARY to treat the serious COVID-19 cases where patients go into ARDS - respiratory distress as their lungs fill with fluid and they get no oxygen leading to death.

Hospitals are going to have to prioritize and decide who lives and dies.
The 15% death rate in South Korea (I believe NONE of the Chinese numbers and SK is giving us real info) for those over age 80 is based on complete and total treatment.
Death rate is 10% for those 70-80. Again, with full treatment because they have a limited number of cases.
Let’s suppose the following:
The spread is doubling every 6 days.
A million will be hospitalized within 6 months and we are still at least another 6 months out to a vaccine.
What will the death rate be for those requiring hospitalization (younger healthy people are 80-85% rate not requiring hospitalization) AFTER all of the ventilators are tied up?
That’s when this disease collapses the system basically and those in bad health or over a certain age are just told to stay home to die.
I have yet to hear a single YouTube expert go into the ventilator numbers yet. Please let them know.

You are right. In this first wave, it will knock-off a great many first line health care people.
The Spanish Flu went around the world a few times. No one should think this one is very different.
It doesnt mean death. But will mean disruption.

The increase in death rates in Italy is a large enough number from a reliable source to confirm the virus spread rate (which many of us have been speculating about).

Trump, INHO, is making a poltical error. He should put his Surgeon General (have you even seen the guy once?) EVERY DAY before the media to take questions. Have him be the face of the response.
He should say this is our Manhattan project and he needs to be perceived as ‘above political’ and not take part in the blame game.
I don’t bother with the FR members thinking this is political. Only way it’s political is that it can kill off a good segment fo the 70 and older population and they tend to vote Republican.
