One thing for certain - especially in more “remote” places like Hubei Province China - nearly ALL men over the age of 40 are smokers. Filterless cigarettes are still popular among the older generation of these men also.

So a new respiratory virus on a life-long smoker who is 60 years old is going to have very outsized effects.

Chinese statistics have also shown that older men are having a much higher mortality.

Children do not have the equivalent immune system as adults. The adult level of immune system is reached in the early to mid-teens IIRC.
