See my post Temperature sterilization.

I am doubtful of penetration by ozone and UVC. I could be wrong. I would want to inactivate the virus in all layers of the mask without causing damage. Heat treatment at 65C is probably best. Cooler than a car in Phoenix during summer. IMHO.

The nCONVID19 (I put n in front on purpose) is novel. We will know more in days and weeks to come. I am going with literature on SARS and MERS. I am confident this is the best we have to go with.

I just glanced at an article that was about a northern Texas company that makes surg masks - something about it’s running full bore and can’t keep up with worldwide orders.

The poor bastard who runs that company was almost in tears talking about how he's been telling the feds for years that this would happen. Been studiously ignored.

Its something like he's undercut in price even though the Chinee ship the cloth to Mexico to be assembled. He's survived by selling to institutions that wanted to avoid this cluster. I remember John's Hopkins for one. His new customers got religion during the other pandemic scares, but would always go cheap again when things went back to normal.

Heard him on Steve Bannon's Pandemic web stream. Worth a listen.

I think Peak Prosperity (could be wrong) interviewed the owner. The owner stepped up production and developed more equipment during SARS. He was left high and dry by our government. He does not want to live with all the layoffs he experienced last time with out assurance this time that his scaled up efforts will be protected.

China has posited that the high rate of mortality in Wuhan was prior exposure to SARS. I’m not sure if Italy was involved with the SARS, but they’re a good test of that Chinese claim.

” Individuals suffering the most may have been primed by one or more prior coronavirus exposures, and due to antigenic epitope heterogeneity, are experiencing the effects of antibody dependent enhancement (ADE).
This postulate isn’t novel as it has been found and characterized in the SARS coronavirus, SARS-CoV. Enhancement was identified by Yang et al. [6] in 2005 and was hypothesized as being the reason for such a high mortality rate in China [7].”
also from Science Direct, reposting from I dunno who posted it first:

Early on one would suspect the patients with existing complications to die relatively quicker. In fact overall they represent a majority of deaths. So one should expect the death rate for patients infected with existing conditions is much higher.

Ozone and UV light will degrade the rubber bands over time on the N95 masks, but will destroy the virus. Maybe buy a big bag of rubber bands at an office supply store.

I saw one guy do a test on his N95 mask at a 3M facility. He used it for 7(?) days when riding his bike in a smoggy city - I think it was 2 to 3 hours a day. The mask was pretty grungy from sweat and stuff and dirty. Still was at 97% or so of the original rating. (So 97% of 95%.)

But yes - need to destroy the virus. Seeing as the masks are a fabric, the virus won’t last as long as on a hard surface. But iirc the coronavirus can still last quite a long time on fabric - 8 hours???

Note - a N95 mask will only filter to 0.3 microns. That covers about 50% of the flu particles emitted from a person. A real-life example of how one views the world - are you a class half-full or half-empty type of person!?

Or perhaps it is more of a class half-full versus an empty glass - which makes it even more logical to wear a mask. Plus the reminder to keep your hands away from your face.

Thanks. My oven has a warm. setting, I’ll have to see if I can find the booklet to see what that is. I know it has to be above 140 F. I was afraid that heat would destroy the mask.

I also have a small UV light that I bought and use in a box for my hairbrush and combs. I don’t suppose that would work either.

We probably won’t even need the masks we have, but I’m one who likes to know what to do in case push comes to shove.

Thanks again.

We need to pray for the president.

Amen to that. All President Trump’s got to do is stay transparent. And if he gets bad advice and learns it’s bad advice, be honest about that, too. he keeps playing it straight with us and his support will remain solid as a rock in a hurricane.

My Florida Costco was a madhouse today. People driving around the parking lot waiting for a spot, cars backed up in gridlock. And I got there early!

Read somewhere that a Asian doctor wrapped his N95 at the end of the day with paper towel. Drying them helps. You need to kill the viri present overnight basically.

thanks for the background. The governor might want to introduce him to President Trump. Partly because, was it Calif?, that just said they had xx number of masks stockpiled, but they were expired. He could be kept busy for at least a few years just bringing state stockpiles up to date. That would make things right.

I always have bag of rubber bands on hand. I bought the masks as a just in case measure—was going through a Doom and Bloom medical hand book. I guess I’m the optimist. I have never taken a flu shot.

I haven’t had the flu(or at least so mild I didn’t know it) since I got the Asian Flu in college-40 years ago. We don’t go anywhere in the winter except a weekly run to the grocery store-and we use wipes hand sanitizer on the cart and our hands respectively as a habit.

I will only use the masks, if one of us gets sick. Surgical for the patient-N95 for the caregiver. I have a whole bunch of trash bags to modify For disposable coverall. I also have face shields and disposable shower caps.

I thought about buying something that would filter out more, but really didn’t know enough to know what to get. I do have several empty 5 gallon clear water bottles I could wear and duct tape to a trash bag shirt. LOL

If it’s not droplets and is just floating around in the air, one would need a full hazmat suit with air source. I do have a portable oxygen tank but really with out a negative flow room can’t see that working. LOL

Thanks.

Matt Hancock says Covid-19 outbreak could force UK to shut down cities

The health secretary tells BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show that the government is considering all options, from closing schools to banning large gatherings of people at sporting events or concerts, if the coronavirus continues to spread in the UK. Asked if it might follow the Chinese strategy of isolating cities with large outbreaks, he said: ‘We don’t take anything off the table at this stage’
