A new case of coronavirus in Santa Clara County, the county’s third documented case, is now the second instance in the U.S. of community transmission of the virus.
The Santa Clara County Public Health Department was scheduled to give details of the latest coronavirus patient at a 4 p.m. news conference.
The county health department said this latest coronavirus case – a 65-year-old woman with chronic health conditions – has no known connection to travel in countries most affected by the virus or close contact with a known infected individual.
The development indicates the virus spreading among two separate populations within Northern California. In a prepared statement, county health officials declared that “now is the time to prepare for the possibility of widespread community transmission.”

I used to live in Santa Clara County. I don’t see how Santa Clara County will avoid exposure to the virus, given the number of asians in the county.

It is the home of Silicon Valley and because the valley and county favored developing office space over living space, its workers come from throughout the Bay Area and into the Central Valley. Thousands, tens of thousands of workers, commute to and from there every day. There are homeless and it is heavily settled by Asians and travel to Asia is very common, but whatever pops there probably will pop all around the central part of California immediately afterwards unless they shut it down.
The incompetent, centralized, politicized CDC couldn't have made a bigger mess if they had Tom Clancy writing the script. How was it possible that test kits were both unreliable and slow to be distributed? So when they are finally available, the numbers will panic highly suggestible Americans?
The method of the coup plotters is known. Their ideology of “ends justifies the means” is known. This is a bloodless revolution, thus far. But the socialists will never stop until their ideas are debated and then rejected in the coming election..
Let me amend my comment. If it pops there among the computer industry workers, it will likely spread throughout the area. If this particular Victim #1 is isolated from the commuting public, the spread is probably not going to happen.

How many people have been tested in metro DC?
If you don’t test (and/or the test isn’t the proper test) you couldn’t find it until seriously ill folks show up at the local hospital.
Once they start serious large scale testing we will have a better idea whether this is a nothingburger or a real threat—and by that time it will either have spread like crazy or not at all.
At this stage we know amazingly little.
My approach—stock up for a no-warning long quarantine, and then stop worrying about it.
