All countries KNOW that this will overwhelm their health care systems. 20% of those who get it require hospitalization. There are 924,107 hospital beds in the usa (https://www.aha.org/statistics/fast-facts-us-hospitals). A typical flu bug infects 60 million in the usa. If THIS infects only half this amount that would mean that 6 million people would need to be at a hospital. That's not counting EVERY other problem that people go to hospitals for.

That's why China is building emergency hospitals at such a clip. It's why EVERYONE is trying to stop it. Countries will go broke on health care.

Typically, to be a “pandemic”, it has to at least reach epidemic levels on two or more continents. Right now, it has really only reached epidemic levels in a single province in a single country, in Hubei, China. While I understand everyone is desperate to hype it beyond what it CURRENTLY is, we are redefining “pandemic” down to a level to meet our hype. It might become a pandemic over the course of a couple months, but right now, it is an “outbreak” everywhere except Hubei Province, China.

Bring Out Your Dead

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
