The reason it is spreading so heavily in Asia is it started in Asia and was spreading there at least a month before they detected it. Western countries have barely started testing, but when they do they do they find a lot of cases. Some have tested positive postmortem. Italy, Iran and the Middle East should have answered the question of whether this in an Asian disease.
The study you listed only had 8 samples, including 1 Asian who smoked.
Here is a bigger study of SARSCov2 that includes different races, and they found race does not play a role but tobacco use was the main difference.

Putting those two together I think that air quality and tobacco could possibly have more effect on severity of this disease.
As Dr. Ian Mackay (Australian virologist) points out that HCoV-NL63 also uses the ACE2 receptor, but it had a worldwide distribution but affected caucasian children the worst.
I guess my point is, we really won’t know how this virus behaves until it is endemic in the west and begins to overwhelm healthcare like it did in China and Iran.

The man who died in the night, a 60-year-old Oise teacher, had been “tested in emergency yesterday [Tuesday] at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in a very serious state and died during the night”, announced the Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon. “The investigation was launched urgently” into the place where this patient may have been infected and his entourage, he added. The mayor of his commune assured the Parisian that he did not come “from Italy or China”.
Including this dead patient, five new cases were confirmed in France between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. For the time being, the death toll in France is two dead, eleven recoveries and four patients still hospitalized, or seventeen cases in total.
