This Tesla Model X Has Driven Over 400,000 Miles. Here Are All The Parts That Had To Be Replaced

Recently sold on the website Only Used Tesla is what is believed to be the highest-mileage Tesla Model X in the world—a 2016 “90D” rental car/shuttle with over 400,000 miles on the odometer. The company that owned it, Tesloop, gave me the vehicle’s full maintenance records, so let’s look at every part that had to be swapped for this electric crossover to reach 400,000 miles in this condition.

~snip~

Before we go on, I want to make clear that this story is not a criticism of Tesla, nor is it implying that its cars are less-than-reliable, or that they’re significantly more reliable or easier to maintain than most other vehicles on the road. There isn’t enough info here to draw those conclusions (consider reading Consumer Reports if you’re after that). The article is simply providing a close look at what it took to keep this particular EV on the road and in good condition for over three years and 400,000 miles. It’s fascinating stuff. And yes, there are a decent number of line-items, but I think we’re all well aware of the copious maintenance issues associated with some internal combustion engine cars, so just imagine how long this log would be on, say, a 400,000 mile Mini.

Anyway, here’s the full maintenance log:

“Even the 50 gallon trucks only take five minutes to fill. Try the same number of vehicles that need twenty minutes minimal.”

LOL! The EV can charge while you are sleeping!

“That is true, but they only carry the electricity very locally. They aren’t carrying it for three million people trying to charge their EV’s. This will overuse the system.”

Nope. Charging current is less than your peak load when everyone comes home and turns every thing on!

Sure, three million vehicles in a large city that are charging simultaneously. That won’t result in blackouts, ever.

I’m just telling you. EV’s are a scam meant to transfer wealth from Joe Blow to Bill Gates and other billionaires. It is meant to limit societal options in life.

May be from scratching off/burning rubber. These electric motors have awesome 0 to 60 times. Front wheel drive sucks for laying rubber so I know I would be laying down some rubber snakes if I had a Tesla.

EVs can be hard on tires. On the bottom-end Leaf I had for 2 years, I ground thru the “rated 60,000 miles” tires in 19,000 miles ... which proved to be a poor choice in manufacturing; replace them with “EV rated” tires, which lasted much better. Electric motors have extremely high torque, wearing tires fast.

The article refers to a rental vehicle. A such the novelty of extreme acceleration was probably used far beyond what a normal driver would do, having gotten over the “OMG this is fast!” thrill and paid for a set or two of replacements.

So yeah tires are a notable cost, but not as bad as the article depicts.

The Tesla is hardly “luxury”. The interiors are pretty bargain basement, second rate materials and badly designed. That’s not to say that they aren’t great cars overall, they are. Decently quick, great torque, convenient and quiet. But they aren’t luxury cars.

They better be fast charge stations. Not many people want to drive 150 miles and stop for the night to charge their car for a 250 mile trip. And a 50,000 fast charge stations would require a lot of new power generation plants and upgraded electrical grid.

Why would 6 inches of water be a problem? Electrics are well-sealed (extremely bad things would happen if they weren’t, and Tesla over-delivers), and traction control is excellent.

And that’s just the Tesla Superchargers.
Buy an adapter, and you can use most of the other EV charging stations (which are substantially more numerous).

This SUV has a 350 mile range. Tesla fast charge stations are about every 200 miles.

It is very dependent on working technology. I can store gas, if needed, for months.

Look at the California fires for exactly what you mentions. Those Teslas became bricks to be burned.

LOL! Ever seen the number of ‘out of gas’ signs at stations just before a hurricane hits!

Our electrical grid is proven technology.

As soon as they make one with a 6 speed manual, I may consider one as a “spare” car.

Until then, no thanks.

Was it proven in New Orleans or Florida or California?
