I think I saw this one. But if it's a cookie and four letters, it's almost always OREO.

I like strawberry preserves with my bratwurst instead of mustard. Call me crazy.

I love slathering ample amounts of mustard on burgers, hot dogs, corned beef, etc.

But I think I’m going to take a hard pass on Oreos. Sorry, but this isn’t a two-great-tastes-that-taste-great-together sorta thing.

"'Did you know that Oreos taste better if you spread a little mustard on them?'" according to the passage. "I then spread a big glob of mustard on two Oreos, shoved one in my mouth as mustard dripped down my chin, and extended the last one toward Lenny. 'Here you go, buddy, give it a try!'"

So, a few Haight Ashbury hippies ate Oreos and Mustard while tripping on acid in the 70's, and the author assumed it's common? I suspect the puzzle writer might be a product of Haight Ashbury him/herself...

Oreo is a useful word for the puzzle makers.

Oleo and olio, too.

So they’re a common answer.

Haight-Ashbury, 1972 as the basis for a crossword answer? - my guess is you could sign off on just about any combination of nouns with a quote from somebody in that venue in that time period as your justification. Reminds me of a party I was at in roughly the same era when one of the participants tried to smoke the fish food.

You’re crazy. Bratwurst with Sauerkraut and Mustard (bun optional) with a good Lager goes to the top of the list.
