WUHAN VIRUS/Experts find how moderate 2019-nCoV infection ends with death

Experts have blamed a form of systemic inflammatory response syndrome called "cytokine storm" for killing some novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)-infected patients who were not very sick in the early stage of infection but eventually died of multiple organ failure, according to Chinese media reports.

The epidemic, which started mid-December in Wuhan, in China's Hubei Province, had claimed more than 800 lives in China as of Feb. 8, including Li Wenliang (李文亮), a 34-year-old ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital who tried to issue the first warning about the deadly coronavirus outbreak late last year but was silenced by the Chinese authorities.

While most victims have been middle-aged, elderly or suffering from chronic disease according to official Chinese data, Li's death, as well as that of a 39-year-old man in Hong Kong, drew media attention as the epidemic has attacked more than 37,000 people in 28 countries around the world.

According to Chinese media reports, Zhong Ming (鍾鳴), a physician at the department of critical care medicine of Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai, warned that in some novel coronavirus cases, patients who developed only moderate symptoms at the onset of the disease later fell seriously ill and died of multiple organ failure.

He termed the condition a "storm of inflammations"

From the article...
Zhou said the novel coronavirus can stimulate the body’s immune system, which can further damage the cells.

“A normal immune system protects, but an over-active immune system can not only damage the lungs but also other organs, including the kidneys, liver and heart,” he said.

.????

Sounds like systemic lupus. Too much of a good thing.

“He termed the condition a “storm of inflammations””

SARS caused cytokine storm as well.

It is the same reason the flu kills some people.

Basically, what made the Spanish flu so deadly. Somehow, young people seem to have been mostly spared. So far.

Few die of an overactive immune system. This one is a medical mystery.

Yep, scary indeed. Those with inflammatory disorders (such as those with Ankylosing Spondylitis, like myself) need to be cautious not to catch this thing.

AS can and often does cause inflammation of the heart and other major organs on its own. My own AS is kept in check by Humira. When my AS was caught my biggest problem was my heart was more than double its normal size. Forget the fact I couldn't so much as turn my head and had so much inflammation of my spine I could barely walk on a good day.

I wonder what this Coronavirus does to people with moderate to severe arthritis. Probably causes heck with them too.

Yeah. Bird flu, Ebola etc...

It’s a possibility with any viral infection, even regular flu.

Not sure what you mean.

It’s a well known phenomenon which is associated with people dying of viral infections.

It may trigger a condition that’s in remission. Viruses are by their nature unpredictable.

You might want to check that statement. An overactive immune system causes things like inflammation which many people die from.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the most significant cause of death in the world. ... Worldwide, 3 of 5 people die due to chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes. (Source: nih.gov)

I was referring to systemic lupus. The culprit is an overactive immune system.

I imagine they will try everything to keep the immune sytem of a person with coronavirus in check.

Why not try prednisone, that will reduce the activity of a persons immune system? - Tom-

Somehow, young people seem to have been mostly spared. So far.

If you look at official Chinese numbers. I saw one picture of an apartment room with a dead family. 3 or 4 children and a mother. The one chart I saw 2 weeks ago that listed the dead only had a 28 year old as the youngest. Most of the dead on the chart were over 65...numbers grew fast the older you got. You can not trust what the Chinese are saying on anything though it might be true children are not as badly effected.
