More than 2,000 people are stranded on Holland America cruise ship after four countries refuse to let it dock over coronavirus fears - despite crew's insistence there are no cases on board

More than 2,000 people are marooned at sea after four countries denied entry to a cruise ship over coronavirus fears - despite the crew's insistence that there are no virus cases on board.

Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines and the US territory of Guam have all denied permission for the MS Westerdam to dock.

Japanese leader Shinzo Abe yesterday said his country would not allow foreign passengers to disembark, saying there were suspected virus patients on board.

However, cruise operator Holland America said last night that 'the ship is not in quarantine and there are no known cases of coronavirus on board'.

Was on a cruise last Feb. Even after having the flu vaccine, I contracted it on board. Cruise ships are self contained petri dishes.

Maybe it is more a factor of...we dont know if it is a bioweapon but Chinese can’t be trusted so we are going to assume it is a bioweapon because CHinese reaction is that of a bioweapon.

That is what I would be doing if I was Trump.

I’m leaving on a HAL cruise in 3 weeks. This should be interesting.

"But the JApanses are concerned about the passengers from an infected area"

Make'em anchor offshore for two weeks. Send supplies by one-way inflatables as needed.

My husband’s company is headquartered in HK. They have run out of surgical masks and asked us to find them boxes of them. We ordered some online but the company says that they’re so backed up that there’s no telling when they’ll ship. I went in to our local CVS this morning and was told that all the CVS stores are out of masks as is the local medical supply store.

What a phone call to make, “...sorry boss, I’m stuck on this cruise ship with lots of food, alcohol and ladies running around in bikinis...”

“Even after having the flu vaccine, I contracted it on board.”

I’ve come to believe that flu vaccines are revenue-generating placebos.

It’s time to simply cancel all cruises until this potential pandemic fades away.

Or else just let the ships leave a port, sail around for a few days, and then return to the port they departed from.

"Or lower supplies from a helicopter."

Yup...that's a better idea.........

A cruise ship "is" a Petri dish, but it is also an ideal quarantine facility. After two weeks, they can be docked and go home.

Don’t ever go on a cruise ship.

Ever.

I’ve honored that rule my whole life.

Found it very easy to do so.

Never had the slightest desire.

I am starting to think the Chinese are practicing extreme government population control. Things are just not adding up.

It’s best to sail on brand new ships. Viking has the newest ocean fleet.

Not really. As we are seeing on the Japanese ship, rooms all share an air system, food source and the virus is likely airborne. The crew is not trained for this kind of contamination control. Every time a positive test comes up, the clock resets to 14 days. They need to be in real quarantine with correct infection control. The Japanese ship went from one passenger on the previous cruise infected to 64!

My wife and I had breakfast this morning with two friends who are flying to Florida tomorrow and going for a one week cruise on the HAL Niew Amsterdam.

If all goes well, my wife and I will take a cruise to Bermuda in October, Norwegian Gem. (no flying involved)-Tom

Yes, but the infection is confined to the ship. And no, the clock is not "reset" every time an infection shows up. By now, just due to the factors you cite, everyone on the ship has been exposed. But even so, so what. See first line..."the infection is confined to the ship".

On old-time sailing vessels on long voyages, there was always a surge of illnesses on leaving port, but once that passed, the surviving crew was very healthy, as they had proven to be immune.
