Zinc can halt the growth of cancer cells, study says (esophageal cancer)

Zinc supplements can significantly inhibit the proliferation of esophageal cancer cells, according to a new study co-authored by a University of Texas at Arlington researcher.

Previous studies had shown that zinc is essential for maintaining human health and protects the esophagus from cancer. However, it has never been fully understood why zinc has the ability to prevent cancer in the esophagus. In this study, a team led by Zui Pan, an associate professor of nursing at UTA's College of Nursing and Health Innovation and a noted esophageal cancer researcher, discovered that zinc selectively halts the growth of cancer cells but not normal esophageal epithelial cells.

"Zinc deficiency has been found in many cancer patients," said Pan, whose study was funded in part by a research grant from the National Institutes of Health -- National Cancer Insitute. "Both clinical data and animal studies have shown that this mineral is very important for overall body health and for cancer prevention."

Zinc is an important element in many proteins and many enzymes and the absence of zinc makes it impossible for cells to function, she added.

"But previously we didn't know why the same physiological concentrations of zinc inhibit cancer cell growth but not normal cells. Our study, for the first time to our knowledge, reveals that zinc impedes overactive calcium signals in cancer cells, which is absent in normal cells, and thus zinc selectively inhibits cancer cell growth." said Pan. "It now appears that zinc and calcium can have a cross talk, meaning that they can be linked."

An insufficient amount of zinc can lead to the development of cancers and other diseases, Pan said.

Here’s a few articles to catch you up. Dr. David Brownstein is an excellent source and has a book titled Iodine: Why you need it, why you can’t live without it.

There’s also a good site called breastcancerchoices.org (or com) that has a wealth of info about the direct correlation between breast cancer and iodine deficiency.

There is a chelated zinc supplement called “ZMA” that is suitable for people who get an upset stomach.

It’s made by a company called Biotest.

Also, don’t drink milk or eat a milk product for 30-40 minutes before or after taking zinc helps with this, nor take a calcium supplement. Calcium binds with zinc and makes a product that is not digested (and thus provides no help) and also upsets the intestines.

Moronic “bodybuilders” wouldn’t need supplements if they’d just eat real food. They’re collectively some of the most unhealthy people I’ve ever met.

Ironically, meat is an excellent source of zinc, including:

Shellfish.
Legumes.
Seeds.
Nuts.
Dairy.
Eggs.
Whole Grains.

I am a sixteen year survivor. The operation is a bitch and recovery is long and trying. But you have no choice. Key to survival is early detection of Barrett’s syndrome. Have an endoscopy if you have history of acid problems or reach age 60. Just do it!

I’m referring to a man that lifts, and wants to be healthy. Bodybuilders are pill popping, Vitamin S freaks.
Most gym guys I know want to be healthy, as well as look good. Many vitamins and minerals are just excreted when the body reaches its limit. You can eat healthy, and supplement.

Sounds about right. Any study on the issue being discussed — Ca interfering with zinc absorption?
