Such happens all the time -- and is often required -- due to security classification. Classic example: "Cover stories".
I'm intimately aware of a US citizen whose wife of many years has -- as yet -- been told nothing but the cover story ("lie") describing his top secret mission during three years of their early marriage.
In addition to protecting security, the "lie"is for her protection, as well.
Such is one of the burdens of doing highly classified national service.
