According to the ADSB transponder data he was following the 101 Fwy to Thousand Oaks. Then suddenly turned and dropped rapidly. Last data point shows he was dropping at 4,000 FPM which is pretty extreme...
Exactly. Lots of dead car crash occupants when the heart keeps moving tearing the aorta.
What happened to Diana. Wearing seat belts in a crash over fifty does you no good; it only makes it easier for the EMT’s to find your body.
Well I’m sure the pilot was watching the gas gauge, and very likely the chopper has a low fuel warning light and warning sound. So if it ran out of fuel, which is not impossible, it wouldn’t be because of circling for a while over downtown. It would be caused by a failure of the gas gauge and low-fuel warning system. The NTSB will look at all possible causes, I’m sure. Running out of fuel, or defective fuel containing water or some other substance, are two of many possibilities. If it’s technically possible, I’m sure they’ll determine whether the pilot was incapacitated by a heart attack or some other medical problem.
Dang. Tail rotor gearbox...?
OK, thanks FRiend. Of course we don’t know anything yet but I kind of side with you that the engine RPM may have not been high enough to allow a safe autorotation.
Thanks for non hysterics and leveled thoughtful analyzes of the crash.Read the whole thread.Kobe was sorry for his past mistakes. His marriage was saved and they had more children, even a newborn. He was a practicing Catholic.Prayers for all onboard and Family and Friends.
that's a lovely sentiment but how exactly do you know this?
no one wants to see a youngish man loose his life....
however in the grand scheme of things, we loose young policeman and young soldiers practically every day.....they will not get long threads of sorrow like they should...
but if we're tired of this now, just wait for this week....we will be inundated with testimonials...
I remember one athlete that I was genuinely so sad about his dying...in a plane crash that he was piloting.....Thurman Munson so long ago....we had already moved away from NYS and were on the west coast but we still loved the Yanks back then...it was heart breaking.....
Very good observations..so sucinct.
The fire wouldnt have spread over a quarter acre without fuel...doubt it ran out of fuel. They will find out the cause.
Flightaware pilot comments say spatial disorientation because of the straight down orientation.
Looked it up. The S-76D is FAA approved for single pilot IFR operation. I don’t know what model S-76 crashed.
100%
Thanks for the info.
Van Nuys is around 800 feet.
They reported overcast at 1100 feet.
From topo maps it looks like he was flying toward terrain up to 2000 feet.
I don’t think he ever reported that he made the transition to VFR, and he never contacted the center for flight following like he was supposed to do.
Make of it what you will.
