To address the surging risk of pneumonia and local demand, the Taiwanese government has issued an export ban for two types of masks between Jan. 24 and Feb. 23. The masks affected by the ban include N95 respirator masks, which can filter at least 94 percent of particles, as well as other masks made from textiles.

Taiwan's Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) on Tuesday (Jan. 21) assured the public that the government had sufficient stocks of surgical and N95 masks and that there is no need to overstock. However, just three days later, the government has banned the sale of the masks to other countries.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs recently told the media that Taiwanese mask manufacturers can produce a daily maximum of 2.44 million units, which surpasses the local demand of 1.3 million per day.

These masks have a metal strip embedded at the top of the nose that must be pinched to conform to the contour of the bridge of the nose to be effective. But word is that the virus can be transmitted through the eyes asc well so goggles are also necessary.

People forget the ears as well. By removing all the earwax from one’s ear canal you in effect remove the protective layer from outside infections.

Someone over there knows something our media are not telling us. This must be really bad.

It at least means local demand for these masks has almost doubled.

We get an awful lot of our medical supplies from China. Dressings, IV fluids, defibrillator pads, sterile surgical packs, medications...

If China needs them for its own people, or just wants to screw us, we’re screwed.

Thank you, off-shoring global corporations and benevolent profiteers.

As most medical professionals are aware, the fiber masks that people wear to protect them from viruses are largely ineffective. Although they may block an infected person from spreading the virus though a sneeze or cough they do not protect healthy people from the primary method of transfer which is hand contact with infected surfaces. Once a contaminated hand makes contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth the virus can quickly enter the bloodstream. This is why doctors use hand sanitizer rather than masks to protect themselves.

The masks seem to serve a cultural superstition that by wearing the mask a person is protected from infection by other people which is not true.

Sounds almost Ebola-like in regards to transmission rapidity and lethality.

This is not good... also seems like some sort of bioweapon that got out. Apparently, the ChiComs f***ed up and let one of their bugs loose.

FYI.

If you decide to buy alcohol as a disinfectant, get the 91% bottle, not the 70% one. Only 91% kills viruses.

A mask is a good reminder not to touch your face, at least.

I agree the masks are a social thing and basically useless. I read recently that the social pressure to wear them in Asia is based on the logic that they block the exhalations, sneezes, and coughs of the wearer. In other words, people wear them not for themselves but for others. It’s considered impolite not to wear one.
