ANKENY, Iowa (AP) Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said Saturday the Oval Office requires a wartime veteran, a niche he occupies exclusively among top-tier candidates in his partys race for the 2020 nomination.
During an interview on Iowa PBS in suburban Des Moines, Buttigieg was asked if theres value in a president who had faced hostile fire.
Buttigieg, a Naval intelligence officer in Afghanistan in 2014, noted he had been present for rocket attacks while stationed at Bagram Airfield, and later faced potential danger as an armed driver in Kabul. Another presidential candidate, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, served in Iraq, but is running far behind the front-running candidates.
This is very real for me, Buttigieg told interviewer David Yepsen. And I do believe there is value in someone in the Oval Office understanding whats at stake, understanding at a personal level whats at stake, when decisions are made that could send people into a conflict.
Buttigieg often sites his seven months deployed to Afghanistan, though has seldom said as directly the next president should be a wartime veteran. The 37-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is the only military veteran in the top tier of the field of Democrats running for president. He would be the only president to have served in the military since George W. Bush.
That perspective is needed especially when weve got a president who thinks that strength is the same as the chest-thumping of the loudmouth guy at the end of the bar, Buttigieg said.

I think that Buttigieg is probably the least horrible of the dem candidates this year. He has no chance in hell and he is horrible, but he is the least horrible.
Really Poofter Pete? You wouldn’t know which end of a rifle the round came out of.
Where is the Al Gore Vietnam picture?
He fought bravely against the Afghan navy and took one in the rear.
As a founding father and president of my college fraternity, I once had a phoney no record poofter try to run, after my resignation. I called him out to my authentic brothers. He lost, hugely and actually quit the fraternity. Never saw him again. Butt-itch-itch will likely suffer the same fate.
Radar for President.
He doesn’t have a Combat Action Ribbon. End of story. Doesn’t mean he’s not a veteran, or that he didn’t serve honorably. But without that CAR, he shouldn’t be playing the “wartime veteran” card because it is misleading.
Excuse me while I go barf. The thought of this little twerp as our nations Commander-in-Chief sickens me.
what we certainly don’t need two men running around in the white house pretending to be husband and wife committing abominable acts-
Ill give you one. Ive been told I can join the VFW. I told their recruiter, I was in during Vietnam, but wasnt boots on the ground. I road ballistic missile subs during that time. He said I was eligible because that was considered Cold War service. I declined. My high school friends, my brotherinlaw and his siblings were in the jungle while I was on a boat in the med. theres a difference. Im a Veteran but not a combat vet. There aint no free ride. IMHO. Buttplug can GFHS.
Buttboy puts the rear in REMF
I’ve gotta ask the question, Why?
“I wish more thought went in to the term Veteran. There are Veterans, and there are Veterans. Most Veterans never saw any more danger than a city bus driver sees. Some Veterans saw things most of us cannot imagine.”
I agree. I’m a Vietnam-era veteran, but not a Vietnam Veteran. I am a Desert Storm veteran, but REMF. My unit ran the air war, and I helped the combat guys (Pilots, mostly) do what they did. Danger? Riding from the villas they had us living in was pretty dangerous. And we had frag from the SCUD-B’s landing on the roof of our villa. Biggest piece was maybe an inch long. Could have been bad, but we were lucky. Worst thing was having one of the Saudi guards go nuts and start shooting at shadows at 6th RSAF HQ, where we were set up, one night, but that was on the far side of the compound from my equipment.
One of my dad’s friends when I was in high school was in the first wave to hit the beach at Iwo Jima. I heard some really interesting stories. I enlisted voluntarily in the USAF, and did volunteer for Vietnam, but I went USAF based on what Earl told me about combat. We’d hunted together. Lower-case V veteran. And happy about it. I know I got off light!
Exactly.
Abraham Lincoln was a veteran of the Black Hawk War.
He drove an admiral around. Which means he was even further away from any fire.
That is what I recall too..yet the AP said:
Buttigieg, who was tasked with reading and interpreting intelligence on the flow of money to terrorist cells
In any case, he is not a seasoned combat vet like he infers...
