“Star Wars” Declining Fortunes as “Skywalker” Nears Billion Dollars But Way Behind Last 2 Films

“Star Wars” is shrinking at the box office. “The Rise of Skywalker” is nearing $1 billion worldwide, but it’s way behind the previous installments.

“The Force Awakens” finished its theatrical run with $2 billion worldwide. That was an enormous hit.

But the next chapter, “The Last Jedi,” ended up with $1.3 billion, a significant fall off.

“Skywalker” shows “Star Wars” fatigue. It’s not quite at $1 billion, and it’s getting ready to say goodbye. Disney will keep it in movie theaters for a while but the big push is over.

I couldn't even stand Star Wars when it first came out.

If I knew Star Wars was going to end up like this, I would have supported the Empire.

I wasted my five bucks for the Rogue One dvd!

I washed my hands of it all after that.
Thanks Disney.
You SNAFU’d my time in the Star Wars universe!

Saw it with my 6 year old son. I came out not sure what to think. Never did I feel engaged or excited like I remember when seeing the first 3 movies back in the 1980s. It seemed to be missing something. The more I think about it the more preposterous the ending was.

I dropped it when the little munchkin wookie things showed up - Listening to my co workers discuss Star Wars, thank God I never watched any more

I got dragged to it by a friend. I’ve never seen such poor acting and UNreality ... people walking around in space breathing air...no wonder our kids are screwed up. This was about the equivalent of a high tech, poorly directed, high school play. A taste if my time and money.

“I dropped it when the little munchkin wookie things showed up.”

Me too. The little cylinder robot beeping a couple of times and everyone immediately able to translate the sounds into complete sentences bothered me from the beginning. But John Williams soundtracks kept me coming back. The music made the movies enjoyable IMHO.

Solo was actually very good.

I was wondering why Amazon didn't have The Rise of Skywalker available for pre-order, but Target, Walmart and Best Buy do.

Trying to milk as much as they can out of the movie theater presentations, perhaps?

The Last Jedi is the worst movie I have ever seen. Each successive Star Wars movie tends to make you appreciate the previous one a little more.

The same thing happened with 2001 A Space Odyssey. The first movie was amazing and broke new ground. Then the franchise fell apart.

Good example. I didn’t make it through 2010. It just shouldn’t have been done. There was no reason.

This happens a good bit. The Matrix was really good. Matrix Reloaded was still okay, but starting to fray. They should have stopped there and wrapped it up. Matrix Revolutions ... I couldn’t finish it.

Chinatown is an all-time great (like 2001). The Two Jakes was pretty bad, as I remember, though I might need to give it another chance. That was a long time ago. It didn’t feel like the same character or the same world.

Alien was really good. Aliens was also very good and very different. 3 was so bad that I quit the series.

The Godfather movies are all good, but I don’t know anyone who puts 3 anywhere but in a very distant 3rd place. It doesn’t feel like the same thing, just a few re-used names.

Yup, they flipped off the fan base that had supported the franchise. I don’t like a lot of stuff Lucas did either but I don’t believe he ever hated the fans or blamed the fans for not liking it. He liked his characters.

Yeah we learned that the only thing that motivates Han Solo to do anything is vagina. Real great.

I also like how the light beams can be seen traveling through space, as if they were solid projectiles, not moving at the speed of light.

I thought it was a good beginning action film and explained a lot about Solo.

Maybe because Disney made Star Wars and with Disney Plus they are now competing directly with Amazon Prime?

I was in high school when SW came out. I didn’t go see it for months, because all of the nerds at school liked it (among other things). Then my big sis went to see it and she told me I would probably like it with the dogfighting star fighters, etc. ( was big into airplanes and WW2 aviation back then and still am)

Went to see it and my imagination was captured immediately. Been a huge SW nerd ever since. Thank you, Mr. Lucas. Too bad Disney ruined it...

Star Wars was great once. Once. In 1977. Every sequel/prequel/SJW wet dream since then has been crap.

For excellent reviews of Star Wars and more combining knowledge with hilarious, off-color commentary, check out the channel of “The Critical Drinker” on YouTube. You’ll thank me after you stop laughing.

He abhorred “Rise” so much that he actually had to make its review a 2-parter. His statement at the end, in which he rightfully and expertly lambastes the creators for so shamefully destroying a cultural icon, is alone worth watching.

The way I look at it now is the first six Lucas films are the Star Wars saga. Disney is non canon apocrypha.

Moichandising! Moichandising! Where the real money from the movie is made!

Same here. Watched the original trilogy instead of Rise of Skywalker. So glad to see it underperform at the box office.
