For many Southern California music fans, the most anticipated moment of the new year is getting the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival line-up, but for nearly 120,000 music merchants, industry insiders and musicians, the annual NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center is where the real excitement is.
The National Association of Music Merchants has gathered every January in Anaheim since 1976 to show off new innovations in the industry. With thousands of exhibitors from around the world, the NAMM Show is one of the longest-running and largest music product trade shows in the world.
This event is all business: The NAMM Show, held Jan. 16-19 this year, is for badge holders only. So while famous faces like Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga and Elton John have appeared there, the general public isnt permitted to attend.
That said, there are ticketed events open to the public that provide a taste of what NAMM has to offer, such as .... The Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, or TEC Awards ...will take place Jan. 18 and be hosted by comedian and musician Fred Armisen. The 2020 Hall of Fame inductees are recording engineer Dave Pensado and record industry veteran Herb Trawick of the weekly web series, Pensados Place. The Les Paul Innovation Award will be given to singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joni Mitchell.
Like Les Paul, Joni Mitchell is a trailblazer who never shied away from taking creative risks as a songwriter, musician, producer and influencer, NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond said via an email interview. Or put more simply, anyone who can say, Yeah, Jaco Pastorius was my bass player is more than deserving.

I wonder if the lousy AB5 law will get any attention, since most of the freelancers/contractors are basically unemployable under the law.

I always liked Joni. I was happy she survived her brain aneurysm.
What a contrast Joni’s story is to that actress who self-congratulated her abortion at the Golden Globes...she will be a nobody shortly. Meanwhile, Joni went through with her pregnancy, and gave up her daughter for adoption - acts that undoubtedly were tough, but they spawned an incredible career. Joni’s story should be championed.
Made for a pretty good song though. She gave it to Crosby, Stills, and Nash to sing. They were at Woodstock.
To me, she is the definition of an artist - Singer. Songwriter. Musician. Poet. Painter. Maestra. And a bit of an eccentric.
How about they honor Neil Peart?
That said, I suspect a few of Neil's endorsers will do something special. All in good time.
Now that I agree with. I am sure later on she regretted her decision but at least she met her and I hope they some relationship.
I was horrified at Michelle Williams and cannot believe she or any woman would admit they had an abortion to further their career but I am sure many have done it and justified it to themselves. Williams saying it like she did made any achievement she had cheapened. I hope that statue brings her comfort on those long nights when she remembers what she did.
If you are going to the NAMM Show, stop by booth 3546, Gizmotron and say hello.
I’m sure that Tama, Ludwig,Drum Workshop drums, Zildjian and Sabian will have something special dedicated for Neil
I like the song
The Southern Cross.
It has been written that Stephen Stills had her in mind when he sung a separate part of it. Anyway, a very nice lady and I pray she enjoys better health in future.
Great songwriter, musician and singer.
I don’t like each and everything she’s done, but I do like quite a lot of her work. Some of her early work slides from one octave into another so effortlessly, I can’t think of anyone else who could sing them in the original manner.
That song “The Arrangement” is one
The choral arrangements of “Car on a Hill” (middle bridge) is another.
Blue was one of the best albums ever made.
I agree.
Heck, she had a young Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays on that tour as well.
I think she once said that she was married to a guy named Art.
After all these years, I still get a chill when I hear the high note in “Rainy Night House”.
A friend and business partner remastered “Blue” and kindly gifted me a CDR copy made direct from the raw studio 2-channel master.
The track “Last Time I Saw Richard” sounds soooo clear, transparent with her voice & piano “right there” in the room.
Jaco Pastorius played on Pat Metheny’s first album, a trio-based group, that many say was his absolute best.
During his Weather Report daze, Jaco played the opening “lead” on their massive hit “Birdland”
